Hello,
I will be applying for OCI later this month and I need to clarify something before I start the application process.
Earlier this week, I cancelled my Indian passports and so now I am eligible to apply for OCI.
I have all the documentation with me except for my parents landing papers and passports since they don't live in Canada.
As per OCI checklist at the Indian Consulate in Toronto, this is what is printed.
Record of landing (IMM 1000)/ Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292) –If the applicant is born at a place outside Canada, Record of Landing/ Confirmation of Permanent Residence is required. In case of unmarried/single applicants, parents Record of Landing and landing passport are required. In case of married applicants, spouse’s Record of landing & landing passport are required. In case of divorcee applicants, divorce certificate issued by the court should be submitted. If the parents/spouse have never landed in Canada an affidavit to this effect should be submitted. In case original Record of Landing/ Confirmation of Permanent Residence is not available / lost, submit a duplicate/certified true file copy of IMM 1000 – Record of landing or IMM 5292 – Confirmation of Permanent Residence issued by the Canadian Immigration authorities.
I am unmarried. However, I do have my original record of landing IMM 1000 and my old Indian passport which has been cancelled by the embassy in Toronto. I was also born in India. What I don't understand is why do they require my parents passports and landing papers? It is very clear to them that I was an Indian citizen by birth. Why do I need to give them my parents landing papers and passports?
My parents live in Dubai and I don't have access to their landing papers and passports.
Can someone please clarify on this requirement for me? Is it mandatory?
You need just your own landing papers (if applying single, not family). The rule about parents landing papers is for single applicants, born to Indian parents in Canada.
Good luck.
