Hi,

I am moving to Canada from USA on Workpermit. My current employer is transferring me. I am not sure about health care insurance. How it will work for people on Work permit.

It says that after 6 month I will be eligible. How do I get healthcare benefits for first 6 months?

Considering OHIP is not available ( you might still talk to the HR who are very knowledgeable on the OHIP coverage), you could get private healthcare insurance from various providers.

Same as the healthcare insurance new immigrants to ontario get for the first 3 months, I used one from Manulife for the first three months.

Most of the Doctor offices, you would be able to pay upfront if no OHIP...

Once you arrive in Canada, you can apply (your employer will most likely help you apply, or apply on your behalf - because they usually pay for it) to be on provincial health care. In

Alberta, you don't have to wait to become covered. In other provinces like BC and Ontario, you will be expected to wait - with no insurance coverage for two months plus the remainder of the month you apply in (so maybe 2 months plus one day, or maybe 2 months plus 30 days) before being issued a medical number and being covered.

So, while being in the country uninsured waiting for provincial coverage, new arrivals often buy visitor to Canada insurance. This won't cover you for regular checkups, only emergency illness and accidental injury.

When trying to find a good visitor to canada insurance policy, it's best to get a quote from a company that shows you as many options as possible. Bestquote Travel Insurance will give you an instant free quote online (just fill in the green quote request form) from all the Canadian insurance companies. They have the lowest rates, as well as the best type of coverage(s).

And they can answer any of your questions too.

The employer might cover you for the 90 day period while you are waiting for OHIP. I believe it is the responsibility of the employer to make sure his employees are covered.

You can also check the following websites for quotes:
