In 2009, when MMS' UPA was voted to continue its run, rice price was around Rs.28 or 30. But slowly it started creeping up and was around Rs.38/40 last month. With diesel proce increase, it has gone through the roof within a week, now selling at Rs. 50/52 per kg. For those in the middle class or the salaried class covered by Dearness Allowance, it may not be crippling, but the majority un-organised sector can never understand what hit them.
MMS in his 80s and with double by pass surgeries wouldn't need more than a cup of porridge for each meal. But the poor and the downtrodden have to toil like the slaves in Egypt when they built the pyramids some 8000 years ago, so that our billionaires can enter the Forbes List and remain there forever.
MMS, Chidambaram and Sonia have successfully made India, one big slaves factory.

What else can one do and for how long can it be sustained? Ultimately all the costs of subsidies has to be paid by someone. All these subsidies should be restricted to only people below a certain income level.
Though a difficult move, Indian government should also look at reducing government size and containing corruption.

Subsidies all right, but it is the super rich and big corporates who are getting the subsidy in reality. Every budget lacs of crores are being written off for them, noiselessly. But when it comes to the poor or the LPG for the lower middle class, a big noise is made about lowering the already "cooked up" price.

You being in TN, I find your statement very hard to belive.
TN is a welfare state to the truest sense,. Just last week, my dad was stuffed with a Fan, Grinder and mixie from Jayalalitha , though he owns a house and he has a savings of Rs. 10 lakhs in the bank (no pension though).
All college students were issued with a laptop which retails in the black market from Rs 8000.
In the state that I am in (Neighbouring to TN), We were gifted one Kg packet of ground wheat for Rs. 1 and the lady is pestering me that she will get me additional wheat and rice at Rs. 1 a kg which I am refusing. But I buy Rice (ponni at Rs. 44 a kg or Doppi rice at Rs. 37 a kg).
I am sure that Rice will be available to TN residents for Rs 1 a kg from the ration shop. So what you are saying is not ground reality.
Rice at upwards of Rs. 37 a Kg is only for people earning in lakhs (like me). I am sure that no middle class person will ever buy rice at Rs 37 a kg. He will go to the ration shop and buy.
