I called few ip guys yesterday trying to understand the system. I was given 2 choices Android box which provides live channels and we pay no monthly and 2nd is IP box where we pay monthly fee. My question was same as you that why pay monthly if android will give me live channels. The guy said the number of channels are more in ip and more reliable. If one server is down they can switch to another which you can't do with android. Also the new movies are uploaded regularly. I still want to learn more before I commit to any.

Hi cool girl,
Please update the thread once you receive some more information. I am looking too...
Please check your PM.
Thanks
OK, let me chip in with my 2 cents :
IPTV = same as your cable but delivered via internet. Also, most providers have access to overseas channels and offer a variety of packages. You need to buy their set-top box to decode the signal and you pay a monthly to receive access. Recommended if you need live access only. Some providers offer earlier programs until 2-3 weeks ago.
Internet TV or Android based XBMC/KODI boxes are simple android boxes which stream shows from remote servers via the internet by connecting networks (add-ons). You just pay for the initial box and the subsequent streaming is free. However, since there is no owner of content, the links may be broken sometimes but with little bit of googling you can find the solution. It is not rocket science but not as easy as playing with remote. Most shows are recorded shows, many in HD. There are a few sites which stream live channels but the connectivity is not smooth.
So depending upon what you want from your tv, make your choice.
I am using XBMC/KODI for the past 2 years and happy with it - but I hardly watch live programming anyways.

I am so far hooked to the Kodi on my laptop that I connect to my TV. But, I thought to give Raspberry Pi a shot and receiving it in a day. Will install Kodi on it, connect to Ethernet, and see how it fairs.
As I don't watch even the live programming from the Cable shows, and rather record, I think I would find my way around for a better TV. Will update in a day or two.
By the way, you can buy a Raspberry PI bundle for a hundred bucks from Amazon. Just in case, if anybody is interested.
