After you apply: get next steps – Citizenship

Once we start to process your case, we will send you a notice telling you we got your application.

We will also send you a copy of the study guide Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Read the guide carefully. The questions in the citizenship test are based on it.

You can check the status of your application online.

If we get all the forms, documents and fees we need and you meet the conditions to apply for citizenship, we will send you a notice giving you the time and date for your test.

After the test, you may be asked to go to an interview with a citizenship judge.

If you and your family sent your applications in the same envelope, your application will be processed separately from your family's unless you want them to be processed together.

If we do not approve your application, we will send you a letter with the reasons why. We will also tell you what options you have.

You will need to contact us to keep your file open if you do not:

give us all needed documents,
appear for a hearing or
go to the citizenship ceremony.

If we close your file and you want to apply for citizenship again, you will have to start the application process over.
Asking questions about your application

While we process your application, you should only contact CIC if:

you change your address,
you plan to leave Canada for more than two weeks in a row,
you are charged with a crime or
we do not contact you about your file within the posted processing times.

Before you ask about your application status:

make sure you have allowed enough time for each step and
make sure you have your receipt or file number when you access our online services.

We will contact you if we need more information or documents.

We will write to you to let you know the date and time of any interviews. Under Canadian privacy law, we cannot give information about your application to anyone but you unless you give your consent in writing.

Yesterday in the Throne Speech they mentioned about a speedier processing, How much faster will be announced later and needs to be seen.
