Boswell, who was born in Blair's Land, wrote a biography on Samuel Johnson, who was a lexicographer. These books, that were written ages ago, are hard to come by. It is nice to know about the literary works of these two authors as they spent their whole life compiling a compendium, with the then available meanings to the words that were in colloquial use.
See if you can get a copy to read and get to know the subtlities of the English language, not out of curiosity, but to enhance the knowledge there by.
Not knowing the meanings of the words and its usage in a sentence you could be easily misunderstood and might complicate your day to day life on this continent. So they want you to work a little harder and come up to the standards that they have set up, because a lot of Immigrants who move into Canada come from different parts of the world, where they might not have the access to books and education in a language that is spoken and used in this country. If you do have a medium of instruction which is current in this country, which is English, then, any test will be a 'walk in the park'. You will come out of the test with flying colours.
I will provide you here under a small quote from Boswell's work. There he quotes Samuel Johnson as saying "When we say we drive piles for piers, we don't mean Hemorhoids for the Nobility".
So, you note here the sound of a word and in short span of time if you are unable to identify the exact word and its meaning, it becomes difficult to continue a conversation. The difficulties are the same in each and every language, whether it be Hindi, Gujarathi, Bengali, Marathi, Spanish, Polish or any Slavic or any other language. If you do not know the meanings of the words and how to use the word in a sentence, life gets complicated. So, command of a language is the road to success and they want to know if you are prepared to learn and excel in your career and life or stay at a level and stagnate and be an 'also ran'.
So, work hard and sharpen your skills and add language too, to it. Whether it be IELTS, GRE, TOEFL, GMAT,SAT, iBT,OET or ESL. The more you master any language, more the power to you.
Good Luck.
