I have a bit of an odd situation for which getting information from CGI Toronto OR BLS will be next to impossible, but I am still going to send them an email.

My son got his PIO in Mar 2006 when we were in US and he is a US citizen. His PIO is valid till Mar 2021 as they give it from 15 yrs. We moved to Canada in 2006 and got his PR here shortly afterwards. He has since travelled to India 3 times on the PIO + US Passport + Canada PR card.

I recently applied for his Canada citizenship as US and Canada allow dual citizenship. He should be getting his citizenship certificates shortly. We have booked tickets to go to India in mid July this year.

I am not clear if I can continue to use his US passport to travel to India and then back. Technically the airline cannot stop him from returning here in India as US Passport holders can enter Canada without a visa.

Then upon entering Canada, I can show the US Passport and Canadian citizenship certificate and they should not object, based on what I interpret from reading this page.

My question is, if I do get his Canada passport, then if I use that to fly into India and then present them that and also his US passport and PIO card, will they object to not having this stupid endorsement of new passport ?

I have travelled with his original US passport which he had when he applied for PIO and his new US passport + PIO card, once the first one expired in 5 years. I never had to do this endorsement. But now with getting Canadian passport, not clear how things change.

I delayed applying for his Canadian citizenship for this reason, but fell for it and applied it, thinking better to do it when he is still 8 years old and not crossed the age to enter college and be treated as a foreign student.

Oh confusions...confusions...hope there are other ex-US residents in Canada who can shed some light.

It's fairly simple

Use the US passport and PIO for travel to India and continue to use that. You cannot use cdn pp and show the PIO at the Indian port of entry.

-- It is a straightforward case.

Use his US passport + PIO to travel to India (i.e. while entering India) - since his PIO card is based on his US Citizenship.

-- Enter Canada as Canadian - using his Canadian passport.

Adding to the above.....

Leave India the same way you entered India - with US Passports and PIO.

Are you referring to being a foreign student in Canada. Isn't he a PR? If so, he won't be considered as a foreign student. He does't have to be a Canadian citizen for that.

...or did I get it wrong...

--------

If you are a PR in Canada, they will charge the normal fees that are paid by the locals. But, since he is a CANADIAN CITIZEN, he will be treated as one, I feel it is one better.!

You are 100% correct.

Just to update the thread. Travelled to India recently.

Used the US Passport + PIO card, no problem.

Coming back, same thing, but at Canadian port of entry, showed his US passport and Canadian citizenship certificate, no questions even asked why he does not have a Canadian passport. So I am not even going to waste money on maintaining both US and Canadian passport. Will just renew the US one.
