Hi,

A family friend gave us a funny excuse as to why she can't go out tonight : Her hair is oily and she doesn't wash her hair on Sunday as he brother was born on a Sunday.

I couldn't believe that relatively modern people (living in the western world) still follow this kind of beliefs. When I asked around I got a few more:

Some North Indians don't do laundry on Thursday as it is the day of Goddess Laxhmi, and they don't want "Dhulai" of their wealth to occur.

One should not get a haircut on the day they were born.

some people use a specific set of clothes to go to the washroom for #2.


Maybe other CDs can contribute to the list.

I know a few which have amused me:

-Not buying anything made of iron on Saturdays.

-Not cutting nails at night.

-Not eating non-veg on Tuesdays.

Some more crappier ones:

- Not washing hair, and clothes on Thursdays.

- Refrain from shaving on Tuesday.

- Not to go out after one sneeze. Either wait for another one, or go inside, drink water, then leave. If two sneezes, then it's fine.

- Don't broom the house inwards.

- Don't broom the house at night.

The sheer number of superstitions that Indians observe, we would've been world's most prosperous and peaceful nation ever.

yes we do NOT buy OIL or IRON on a saturday. ( this applies to new cars or scooters as well)

do NOT cut hair or nails on tuesday

will NEVER sweep the floor after DUSK

if in India, will always wash feet before entering the house

will NOT give loans on Friday ( for that matter will not pay anything on that day)

if someone SNEEZES before we travel, we sit and have water and then start

always ensure the box containing GRAINS ( rice, wheat) in our house is never empty

Never loan SALT or OIL...especially on saturday

do VAHAN * vehicle* puja and tie lemons on number plate to remove buri najar on our cars

......many ........many .....more

the thing is all other cultures including Western, European, Mid East , Far East all have their own rituals and superstitions

Through out my life I have done and demonstrated how stupid is superstition. Never affected me personally, I rather enjoy screwing up with superstitious people. Its my best time pass.
