Dear members and senior CDs, we are a family of 3 migrating in the month of August from Dubai. My son is 6 years and will be starting school by September after we arrive.

Could you please guide on us convenient areas to settle down as new comers given the fact of transportation and easy connectivity to most areas. We did our landing last October and are winding up for good by august.

Hence we have started doing our research but a little confused about good recommended schools for elementary level.

Also, are there any specific periods of "no" or "high" recruitment during the parts of the year or is it the same all year around? As this will help our move as we will be starting right from scratch.

Any advise is most welcome.

Thank you.

NEED HELP IN THE BIG MOVE....

Since you have quite a bit of time on your hands, please see if these links posted here will help you in your research.
1) For rental apartments, you first will have to form your own budget. The VIEWIT section will give you an approximation in your rental costs. No one knows what the apartment will look like, seeing the pictorial display. You have to see the places yourself and then decide for yourself. With one kid in tow, you will need TWO BR Apartment. That is the norm. Look for a school near by.
2) A few maps are provided to you to get to know the GTA Areas and the TTC Map to give you an idea where the subways are currently running and the future of GTA and TTC. There is a charge of $3.00 per ride and about $133 for a Monthly Pass.
3) There is an overview of the General Education and the syllabus and curriculum etc., thrown into it. You will need all of the Immunization Certificates and a letter from the previous School to get a better standing. If none, then, contact the local school, of your choice of the areas and the schools close to where you are going to rent. They will provide you with a placement.
4) Most of us know some one here in GTA. If you do, then contact them prior to arrival. If you do not know anyone, then, post to this board and ask for an opinion about the location where you want to rent and get to know the schools nearby.
5) Initially, get into a Paying Guest House for a week and view the places that you might have selected between now and your next arrival. Then go and see the places, personally and then decide for yourself. DON'T FORGET, that places do get taken and they vanish as fast as they appear. It is more so during August, just before the Schools reopen. (The First TUESDAY after the Labour Day)
5) Employment situation is experiencing its ups and downs. More downs, than ups. That does not mean that you will not get a job. If you have prepared yourself well and your qualifications are already accepted as equal, then, you are one step ahead of the game. If you have identified your employers and know where they are located, you are already on your way to finding a suitable post. All of these are advance preparations and only a few do such extensive research prior to arrival.

Part time jobs become available from day to day. Keep in touch with all of the web based advertisers and also with the Employment Agencies run by the Governments and their postings. Hopefully you will find something suitable after you settle down.

GOOD LUCK.

FH.

Not sure of you location but if coming to Toronto, I would recommend Mississauga and living on web drive.
The school for Webb drive is good. Square one is a shopping mall and a bus transit station. Very nice place.
Webb Drive apartments may be $ 1600 rent now.
Cheaper is Kaneeff but it falls under a different school which is not good.
Next option is Islington (near the transit station). It is convinent but not sure of the school.

They say hiring starts in Jan.. But Jan. is peak cold. Summer starts in May and so that is the best time to land. After October, they may not hire professionally. In Dec. they will hire for temporary works for Christmas.

Stalwarts TK and FH have given good general directions. Follow them but remember every person has different personal situation.

What will be your profession ? job ? business ?
What are the qualifications and experience? Over here the life, kids schools, your accommodation preferences all revolve around or gets dumped ! depending on your or your spouse's job location and nature.

In my view point , transit & mobility is key for a new immigrant in initial period. Bring your license and if possible an IDP. Travel light to start with. Hope you did well with the goods to follow list. No need to mention that you are bringing good amount of wealth to our country. How much you bring will define your level of desperation or patience during job search. Tell me if you want to know how much ? Many of us are good with numbers and ball park figures. Build a good linkedin profile btw.

Dear members, thank you for the tips. We did our landing in October as we had to enter the country before December. And we stayed for 15 days in Missisuaga and found that to be a good suburb. But we encoutered an issue of transits and connections to downtown toronto. Yes it is surely a conveinient area to live in. Could anybody suggest if there are any good schools in and around Islington / Scarborough, York?

My husband is into apparel retail sales (he is a brand manager) so looking at some place close to probably malls, retail shopping centres etc. Iam an administrator with 11 years of experience and both of us are open to taking part time jobs to start with. we are very well aware of the hardships we are going to facing for about a year or so.

But we are just a little unsure where to start with interms of areas to live in especially schools. Like you said, we can always move after the lease if we are unhappy.

Also, how good are the basement apartments to start with ?

Welcome to Canada. Be prepared for the worst and u wl succeed if u are positive and ready for adventure. ;-)

All places r good if u r good but yes...if you are used to car and luxury then...initial 1-2 yrs can be tougher or even nightmare if u start blaming each other for coming to Canada.:)

U can mke ur life little bit easier if u tke the following steps:-

1. stay in basement till u get a job but be prepared to move anywhere n wherever u get the job. don't be rigid that u want Toronto or any other place.

2 Make sure amenities and facilities r close by esp if u hv small children in hand.

3. Be mentally prepared for 6-12 mnths of job search in ur own field or be prepared to tke any job to get Canadian experience.

4. complete all formalities and get driving licence even if u won't buy car for 1-2 yrs coz this wl reduce ur insurance.

5. Pl feel free to ask for help....send pm to me and I shall help in my capacity.

Don't be nervous or scared. Come with big smile and positive thoughts as well hope and dreams to succeed. All the best. Be strong.
