Train travel in India is enjoyable if you have planned out well and have confirmed reservations which simply evaporate as the time nears .

Adam,
I sort of donot agree with you.
I have been travelling in Trains (South India) for the past 3 years and at no time I have encountered difficulty / time delay or unclean washrooms.

In case I go overnight to a town (for personal reasons), I use the train washroom for $hitting at 6 am. I take bath in AC waiting rooms. It is pretty good Rs 5 to Rs 20 is the charge and I go fresh on business. I generally lie to my friends that I booked a hotel and took bath.

In some stations like madurai, the WC's are pretty good. In some places, it is Bombay toilet (like Trichy). I donot use Bombay toilets except on trains.

I agree that North Indians are more dirty (not physically but they dirty things). I will use my common sense. In case I go to big towns, then I will $hit at the shopping malls and take bath in the railway premises. I new underwear is Rs 40. It is better to uhicse and throw rather than washing it and drying it (which will take a few hours).

Booking by railway can be done before hand (like I know that I will need 4 days in Delhi and 2 days in Mumbai or 2 days in B'lore). Thatkal is also there. So it is not a problem.

Anyway it is a long time ahead.

Murali

It looks like you are losing touch with your Canadian English. That is O.K. I just want to ask you one small question. Are you an Indian or a Canadian. Go ahead and spend all your pennies.

I have a few close friends here who are from MeghAalaya, who call their home town Megha Laya. I laugh at them. But they own that place, so who am I to laugh at their pronunciation.

Now to the crunch...: Before you throw a few names and book a ticket, make sure you will get one or you can drop in and visit that place, otherwise your so called trip through India will not even leave the town of Maravandimaddhalam.

Long time ago the Indian Government Brought in a The Foreigner Protected Area Act, the Government Insisted upon that you obtain Protected Area Permit also known as PAP before you enter these boonies. Now it will cost you a pretty penny ($30.00 US) and you apply for one such Permit and they might insist upon you havciing a group of people of Four at the the minimum and a Recognized Guide to make that trek. Otherwise No Go. Also it was valid for only TEN days. That was for one location. So, make sure that one such PAP that will take you through all of these pre planned places, before you start. Even Indians do require one now. Otherwise you will get turned back at the chowki Post. But you are allowed to stand by the bush and piss in the forest. May be your aim will get better after that.

Send us a few good pictures, (not with you by the bush) and any other will do, you know one with the straw hat! And with the Khaki Short, if you have a tyre Iron, will be much better, bending down and changing a FLAT.

Have a good one and say Hi to that Yimchunger Naga Lass. (Thasunno!)

Why do you assume that he will get disease/s ?

And don't people living here get diseases ?

I don't quite understand the point.
