Train travel in India is enjoyable if you have planned out well and have confirmed reservations which simply evaporate as the time nears .

Adam,
I sort of donot agree with you.
I have been travelling in Trains (South India) for the past 3 years and at no time I have encountered difficulty / time delay or unclean washrooms.
In case I go overnight to a town (for personal reasons), I use the train washroom for $hitting at 6 am. I take bath in AC waiting rooms. It is pretty good Rs 5 to Rs 20 is the charge and I go fresh on business. I generally lie to my friends that I booked a hotel and took bath.
In some stations like madurai, the WC's are pretty good. In some places, it is Bombay toilet (like Trichy). I donot use Bombay toilets except on trains.
I agree that North Indians are more dirty (not physically but they dirty things). I will use my common sense. In case I go to big towns, then I will $hit at the shopping malls and take bath in the railway premises. I new underwear is Rs 40. It is better to uhicse and throw rather than washing it and drying it (which will take a few hours).
Booking by railway can be done before hand (like I know that I will need 4 days in Delhi and 2 days in Mumbai or 2 days in B'lore). Thatkal is also there. So it is not a problem.
Anyway it is a long time ahead.
