Looks like " Ache Din Aaa Gaye " !

1.Booked appointment online for application at the closest Aadhaar centre.

2.Took the necessary documents & completely filled form. Extremely polite & well mannered staff in an Indian Gov. office, that was a SHOCK ! Whole process took maybe 20-30 minutes.

3.Within 4 days received an email that your Aadhaar card has been processed & will be mailed shortly. You could track the status online .

4. in the meantime,You could also download & print an Electronic copy of your Aadhaar card. The E-Copy can be used anywhere till the hard copy comes in. It has almost the same status as your regular hard copy Aadhaar card.

5. The actual hard copy i.e the actual physical Aadhaar card was delivered to the house by post..in just 12 DAYS !
In the past in India it would take 12 days just to find out which form to fill & which rude & arrogant & corrupt Gov. office to go to !!

6. The BIGGEST thing of all , NO spelling mistakes & TYPOS on the card anywhere ( an Indian speciality) !..ha ha .. Name & Address spelled perfectly :)

NO Bribes anywhere , NO touts/agents anywhere ( India's speciality ) , Streamlined process, NO confusion , vaguness, RED tape , ambiguity, bureacracy anywhere !

You follow the rules & due process and keep your end of the bargain , and they ( gov. officials ) keep their end of the bargain ..simple & straightforward process..NOT rocket science.

Gotta give credit , where creit is due & praise is due !

If only they could stream the OCI process & make it a bit faster & less tedious & complicated !

Get rid of BLS & other outsorcing companies, they just act as postaman & couriers, and just add another layer of bureaucracy & cost .

2 physical trips become , 4 physical trips due to these BLS, VFS type of guys.

Just hire more staff & more professional & polite & knowledegable staff in the embassy & get things done over there. Charge a bit extra if you want , but don't waste people's time & energy. Get it right the first time.

Adam,
I second that. I went through the process some 2 years back.
Since I live in a town which has many gulf workers, the centre was empty.
When I went in, they told me that I willl have to schedule an appointment and they told me to leave my cellphone number and that they will call the next day.
They did call and fixed an appointment on the next day.
Went in at 3 pm. We were led straight to the agent (it was outsourced). There were 3 people ahead of us. We were 3 people in total. There was 3 people ahead of us. It took 20 mins. for them to finish.
We were done in 10 mins. They wrote our details down and asked us to cross check, which we did. The address was just copied.
The scanning of the iris and finger printing took some time.
We got the Aadhar card in 6 months (by post) though we got the acknowledgement then and there.
Aadhaar is pretty useful. It is a proof for my photo identity as well as address proof.

Jai Hind !

If you have PAN card , Aadhaar card & Election card & Indian PP in India , you are set for life.

Even RATION card is needed for some poor people, mainly to obtain subsidised food/fuel.

Another things is stuff like electricity bill , water bill & phone landline bill ( not mobile )..they put undue emphasis on it in some areas :(

Guys,
I will tell you what you need in India.

1. DL - Photo identity and proof of address

2. Aadhaar card - School admissions and for obtaining govt. services. It is also a photo identity and an address proof. The best part is for getting the Aadhaar card, they are not very strict of the documents taht you need to bring for address proof. I just took my bank statement.

3. PAN Card - for employment, high value transactions. Also a photo identity card.

So pretty much DL (as an adult) or an Aadhaar & PAN card is all that you need.

Can you use a Rental agreement as proof of addy for Aadhaar card in India ?

Just PAN card & Aadhaar card should be enough for almost anything in India , like opening a resident bank account, getting a mobile etc.

No need for Driving License , Passport , Election card etc.

Lot of people in India don't drive or have a car , especially ladies in India most of them don't drive , so 50 % of population goes right there..so they don't have or need a DL.
