hello everyone

Found this forum which seems to be really beneficial, thank you for adding me

I request you all to please help in solving some queries I have.
1) We are visiting Toronto to collect pr cards in july . which is the best place to settle ( I have few options in missisuaga, Brampton, etobicoke and scarborough). found some rental ads on kijiji and here too. We want to explore consulting oppurtunities. (not job). ( we will stay in Toronto for short term (july-sep). and will settle permanently next year.)

2) I have seen on google companies giving medical insurance to visitors in Canada. any recommendations? I have two kids ( one six year old and one is one year old).

3)If I take a place in Brampton, will commuting be really tough? ( like going to downtown/bloor street etc) to find some consulting business

4) Any very important pointers for us that people travelling first time usually miss out? anything or any reminder or suggestins you would like to give?.

Please help

Welcome.
YOur questions are answered pointwise ;
1. Missisaauuga / Etobicoke and Toronto is the best. There are some good serviced apartments in Mississauga. Go by recommendations. It should be by an agency and not individuals. Scarborough can be a little dangerous. At Vic. park, there are a lot of middle eastern (muslim) people and some what poor indian immigrants. There is a very affordable chinese guest house there which is good. THis is just walkable to the subway. If finding a contracting job is your main idea, then you should stay close to the subway line (or one short trip to the subway line) in Toronto.

2. Good names are Blue cross, Sunlife.

3. NOt really but it will take too long by bus. You will get fed up. You will have to come to Mississauga and then to the Toronto subway.

4. If you need money saving tip, PM me seperately

Holy S..... That's a very general (and somewhat loaded statement). Vic Park is approx. 19 kms long from Queen Street to Steeles Ave. Which part of Vic Park are you referring to, or is it all of Vic Park?

Hope you're aware that the East side of Vic Park fall under the old city of Scarborough and the West side under the old city of North York.

SOme of my friends were there and my statement is based on that.

Yes , Mississauga is a better option. Especially east end of Mississauga ..or border of Mississauga/Toronto ..like Etobicoke.

Airport is closer , lot of companies also in Mississauga also. So you have access to both Mississauga & Downtown Toronto.

Scarborough is a ghetto , lot of crime ..& schools are not good either for kids.

Brampton will be tough to travel, if you don't have a car. Even if you have a car driving in winter & snow storms is a nightmare..lot of accidents etc.

Try to stay within TTC or GO transit or Mississauga transit area, if you don't have a car.

---------

1) You are visiting Canada for the first time. If anyone wants to consult you, can you make it a little clear to us how you want to go about it. Is it about CANADA or is the consulting you want to offer to others is about the business you are in? If so could you post it here for a few to use your services. If it is a lucrative business why don't you offer it to us and if we find it is good, some one will grab it.

To be a business consultant, you got to be in good standing in the business community. Since you are not even here, try and make a pitch and see if the idea will float?!

2) you already have some good advice there.

3) There are GO trains from Brampton to Union Station, Which will cost you $8.55
http://www.gotransit.com/publicroot/en/fares/farecalculator.aspx#
http://www.gotransit.com/timetables/en/schedules/maps.aspx#

4) This I can offer to you here. Just land here in Toronto. Take all kinds of guided tours ands see the country. Stay here at a location, (YOU MUST KNOW THEIR ADDRESS AND A POSTAL CODE AND A PHONE NUMBER also) and provide this to the Immigration authorities at the Port of Landing for them to send you the PR cards for you and the family. Collect them and leave.

DO NOT Open a Bank Account.
DO NOT Apply for your Health Card.
DO NOT apply for a SIN card.
DO NOT get a driver's licence.
DO NOT buy a House.
DO NOT get into any business deals

Come down enjoy your stay, collect your PR cards, pack up, take it and GO.

Bon Voyage.

FH.

tthank you so much for your responses.

FH: I don't have any business idea, my husband is CA and he hasjust started his own practice. Now, we are not going to find or try job there in Toronto, but would definitely want to see what consulting oppurtunities it can offer to us. ifwe get some oppurtunities , we can move there very soon, may be next year.

I am travelling with two kids (one is just one year)so guest houses and serviced aptts were not working out. serviced apt in missisuaga are charging really high.I am looking for basements or walk out that are furnished(short term two months). Good basements (spacious ones) are mostly in Brampton area.

How much time it takes to receive PR cards, two or three months?
