In my neck of the woods, Indica is the preferred choice for taxi companies and Maruti is preferred by individuals. I do not know why this is the case.
Personally, I like Hyundai better.
Edit: Perhaps, Indica is better for rough use by uneducated drivers and Maruti/Hyundai is better for owners who are more delicate users.
I share your feeling Ramar.
I bought a new maruthi in 2011. It was fitted with branded JK tyre.
I give for servicing once a year. 2 years I personally went and hence everything was OK.
Due to some deal, the 3rd. time I gave it to a servicing company some 15 kms away. It was free pick up. I got the car back the next day.
Some 4 months before, I crashed my car into a median and burst my tyre. I went to pick up my spare. It was a no name brand. My jackie and spanner set was missing. I had to call my friends to help me fix the tyre.
The next case is when my battery died midway. I gave a call to Mauruthi service centre. They came with a new batter for Rs 4000 in 30 mins. (It was 3 pm on a sunday). Their service charge was Rs. 300 and they bought my old mattery for Rs 300.
So there are chances that the dealer is cheating. But not to worry. If it is Mauruti and you odge a complaint, they will call you and find out. Not sure how they will help but you will receive atleast 3 calls. You can voice your grivence then.
One major advantage with maruti is the wide after sales service and the cheap cost of spares and the long time needed for servicing. I service my car only once a year (hardly ride 5000 km a year).

ramar2005, you should call the manufacturer and find out. I find it strange that new car dealers in India can go to the extent of changing original parts before car is sold to customer. This would be very high risk for the dealer as their dealership can get cancelled. Also for the manufacturer it raises liability if something goes wrong, so I think they will take this matter very seriously.

A used diesel swift will be a better bet than new Alto.
But a used vehicle may have been abused and the odometer readings are so suspect in India ...
Buying new has some peace of mind.
BTW I drove a Swift diesel last Dec and it was good

Diesel Swifts are hard to find. The key is to buy from someone you know. My brother just sold his low km 2012 Swift for 4.75.
