Patels, from the legacy of Sardar Patel declined reservation many decades ago. But like Brahmins they too have become victims of the reservation policy of governments as it is being practiced now.

All leaders know about the flaws in the policy, but nobody wants to talk about it.

Governments have to be more scientific in identifying those who need reservation, like economic backwardness, like children who suffered trauma of death of one or sometimes both parents, children living in villages and studying in rural schools etc. Even then it should be for only a few years in their lives. To begin with families of those who have secured senior positions in government like minister or IAS, must be declined the benefit.

For Patels or Brahmins there are too choices. Either the governments weed out the creamy layer or people belonging to the mentioned castes get out of the country.

The core issue being communities having a sense of entitlement. Except for SC and ST, most other classes/castes in India have been ruling class one time other in history. So nobody else deserves reservation in India other than the aforementioned two groups.

Govts. strategy should be to:

1) Shrink bureaucracy to an extremely small shell from its current megalithic size and make govt. jobs rare and redundant.

2) Use new technologies to make elite institutes accessible to much wider audience. Like open source computing, have open source education. It is already happening in US(eg., the MIT OpenCourseWare initiative). Graduate very large numbers of professionals without sacrificing quality.

3) Focus on basic education/health for all Indians.

Point number 3 is most important.

Also focus on basic agriculture problems for farmers in villages.

Why people want reservation? To get govt. jobs which are infamous for bribe income, no accountability and job security. Govt. should have strict anti-corruption laws with strict implementation to put a stop on corruption. All govt. roles should have defined accountability with a timeline and finally fire 5% of least performing govt. employees. The Govt. employee’s salary should be at par with the private sector so there will not be any charm in govt.jobs. These steps will resolve the reservation issue to some extent. Now the million dollar question is who will take these steps? The political leadership has no will power. They want to keep the vote bank. I don’t see any light.

most people involved in fighting are diamond cutters from north gujarat - i have known them very well since i use to hang out with those groups in india.

not sure about other places but in surat they have strong hold... in Brawl or fight - you see them in truck loads... Surat used to be calm before they started migrating , it happens in early 90's.

now this is all politically , very well plan riots

I may be reading this incorrect - but do you wish to say that these are 'good' riots? Very well plan throws me off a bit.

I think this is an indirect hit at the issue of reservation forcing everyone is voice their opinion against ALL reservation. If that was the intended purpose of this agitation, it was handled poorly, they could have done it more peacefully and respectfully.

Also, this seems to be the pattern of Modi camp to raise contentious issues publicly where most politicians are scared to venture. It reminds me of the debate on article 370 which died down suddenly around the kashmir elections.
