Hope CD's remember Sankaracharya /Vandemadaram Sir.
As he was a good friend of mine, I touched base with him.
He lives in the GTA.
He told me that due to low interest rates (and thus mortgage) price of houses have gone through the roof.
He also talked of "Uberization" of jobs where in people are invited to perform specific tasks for specific hours. Thus even full time contract job are hard to find in this economic times.

Yes, $600k is the new normal for a detached house.
Doesn't matter the Uberization, IT people normally prefer Contractual work due to the higher pay.
I wonder why in Toronto, people are finding hard to find the contract time-bound jobs when it's the biggest economy? Please enlighten.

To get the contract itself, you have to be an expert in that particular area of IT.
Lol !
We are not talking of IT jobs at all. I know that IT/ Finance is hot in Canada and am not discussing it at all.
What Sankaracharya / Vandematram was telling was that it is so difficult to get continuous jobs for people in professions other than IT/ Finance.
When I came to Canada i n2002, I was sent to factory using a recruitment agency. After trying several recruitment agencies for 6 months, I landed up in a job which was relaively easier and they offered 12 hours shift. My salary then was just min. wage (what the recruitment agency gave me) and I was paid $ 8 for 44 hrs. and $ 12 for 16 hours. After 1 month, my employer offered me a direct job (wages like $ 12 an hour and 1.5 overtime). I refused since I had got my line job at $ 10 an hour.
What Vandematram / Sankaracharya was telling was that those kinds of jobs are no longer available. Agencies try to used different people through agencies.
I was there in Canada in the horrible recession of 2008/09. It was really bad. GTA residents who do labour jobs (new immigrants) should tell me of the current situation.

I was expecting manufacturing related jobs to pick up considering CAD USD exchange rate. Don't know what is the reality on ground though.

Manufacturing jobs have long gone to China and won't come back. Period. Doesn't matter if the CAD is at its lowest ebb or otherwise.
Western and developed economies have to be contented with the Service sector for decades to come and may be forever.
