Hello,

I have a Canadian bachelors degree in Economics with about 3 years of work experience in finance/accounting and would like to work in the US through the TN Visa (Economist or Accounting). I was wondering if any members here have any experience or recommendations if there are any favourable job listing sites or such for TN visa job hunters? I'm not really sure where to do the job search since most postings or application processes I see require you to answer if you are authorized to work in the US or clearly state they do not sponsor for work (do not want TN visa candidates either).

I would appreciate any help in this regard.

Thank you in advance!

Why does this seem like spam to you? It is a genuine question to which I am seeking answers. If you can't help in this regard let others who can.

I don't think your 3 years of experience in a warehouse, factory or gas station will count in US.

There is a list published by the USCIS which contains the occupations / job titles eligible for TN. You may want to review that list to see where your degree and the current professional experience might fit in. If you do not see a fit, your chances for TN is slim to none.

In a number of cases, USCIS might require a match between your degree and the profession you are in. In other words, I don't know if an economics degree and a finance experience are related to each other in the eyes of USCIS.

If you do see a fit, then you are in the same boat as other job seekers. Unfortunately, most reputable companies do require you to answer 2 questions - whether you are authorized to work and whether you need sponsorship now or in the future.

However, many companies seem more receptive to TN than H1 due to the inherent process simplicity, not to mention low processing costs. But then, it all depends on supply and demand within your occupation.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Dimple2001 for your response and helpful advice! Some more questions, if you or any other members can answer.

1) Yes you are right on most companies job portals they always ask "are you legally authorized to work in US" the only answer you can select is "yes or no". Technically when applying I have no US work status so the answer should be "no". If I say yes, that would be lying. So what should one do, just say no and hope for the best or they'll straight away throw out your application?

2) On my resume & cover letter the phone number & address is my Canadian contact info (I do have family in US and I'm trying to find work near their areas). So should I keep my Canadian address or use my relatives US address?

3) In the cover letter should anything be mentioned about how easily the TN status can be obtained?

4) Has anyone had any luck going through US recruiters/temp/staffing agencies?

Thanks!

1. Some companies ask the 2 questions to filter out candidates and some to know what they are getting into if they make you an offer. Hopefully, the latter applies than the former. Yes, you should answer truthfully as the truth will come out eventually even if you answer incorrectly.

2. Many companies do hire Canadians on TN; hence many are aware. So, in my opinion, a Cdn or US address would not make a difference. However, if you are not a local candidate (within commuting distance), and if they are looking for a local candidate, you'd not be considered. For example, a candidate from Toledo applying for a position in Detroit is not a local candidate; however, a candidate from Windsor would be (strictly by distance).

3. Do not mention anything. If they are interested in you, they will go ahead with you.

4. Recruiters are always a hit or miss. They don't work for you and therefore their attitude will reflect that unless they are interested in your application. A few however are pretty good and tend to be in contact through social media.
