Hello friends

I am a finance professional currently in UK. I have about 5 years of finance experience in full cycle accounting and with a UK - Chartered in Management Accounting ( CIMA) qualification.

I am currently weighing my options between Canada and UK PR. I am slightly biased towards Canada as I have PR option from day one where as my UK PR comes after 3 years as I will finish my work permit.

Also my UK chartered qualification gets converted into CMA , Canada under Mutual recognition agreement between CIMA and CMA/CPA. So when I will arrive in Canada I will get a CMA qualification without any further studies.

I am bit unsure about job prospects as on various forums I have seen many friends raising the issue of people not getting jobs in their professions. I am open to any provincial destinations such as Toronto, Mississauga, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary etc.

I wanted to know if I am thinking straight in my plans :
1. I am thinking that upon arrival in Canada I would at least manage to find a job in finance that pays me around $50k. with my CMA designation and experience.

2. I understand settling in a new country is always a time bound process. But want opinions from my friends in Canada.

Also some guidance on finance jobs and job prospect would be greatly helpful.

Thanks
Pratik

Hi Pratik,

Indeed/workopolis/monster ll give you an idea if enough jobs are available in your field.
Glassdoor will give you an idea about the salary range.

If you are confident in what you do and there are enough jobs available here, then I don't see any reason why wouldn't you get one.

As you are in planning phase, you may google the whether in canada and see if you are ok with it.

All the best,

Do you already have a UK work permit and employed there? If so, it might be better to stay put. Three years with a job in UK is better than a question mark if you will get a job or not in Canada though you may be a PR.

I believe you know that Canadian PR now is invitation based. You can apply to go in a pool of candidates but there is no guarantee that you will be invited for PR.

Primary assumption that you will get both is wrong.
Apply for both , decide ones you get one. Currently you are standing two fences away. cross one at a time.

I would only advice you to get in touch with the group that you wish to join here in Canada, if and when you decide to get into Canada. (OR Not) They will provide you with all of their Professional guide lines and the avenues that are made available to you in the Province that you wish to settle into.

They do have restrictions and NO FREE ENTRY into any occupation is permitted in ONTARIO. (If you wish to know the actual wording, "SOME RESTRICTIONS DO APPLY";) More on it if you wish to take it up further, and it varies from Province to Province and a few will provide you with FREE Entry.

There was a similar case like yours that I did an analysis for and he was 39 years old and had 15 years of service in CIMA and got an entry into Canada and my evaluation was found to be fairly accurate in the determination of that individuals ranking and scores. He subsequently got in. He is here in Canada and had a few teething troubles and is currently well settled drawing a SIX figure salary.

You can try Robert Half.. and see the links under..
Lannick Associates - http://www.lannick.com/assoc_index.php" rel="nofollow">LINK http://www.lannick.com/
PTC Accounting and Finance Inc - http://www.ptcaccounting.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
Robert Half International - http://www.roberthalffinance.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
Randstad (formerly Mergis Group) - http://www.randstad.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK
Another good website would be http://www.workopolis.com." rel="nofollow">LINK
This would give you an indication of roles and salaries.

Those who enter into Canada cannot read their own palm and some need to find the local "LOO" when they first try to get into an Office. No keys to the executive wash room are issued. So, there you go... you will have to find your own way to it. This is just an analogy.

At the same time CIMC now has a new wing just got started for people like you and that is why I said join the group, and they will MENTOR you into a post and generally they will hold your hand and walk with you till you get settled and feel comfortable in your new post. (Some times they short change you and post you to a lower level and cut corners.) This has been going on for a long period and Canadian CEO's ad COO's are well known for these kind of acts. It has been the way for a long long period. Hence the Mentoring here, currently.

Hope this helps you a lot in making up your mind in Immigrating into Canada. If I were you I will put it off unless you are pissed right off with the Limeys. I reserve my right to run them down at a later date.

As few of the others have pointed out here, take one step at a time and do a little bit of research and get to know your work here in Canada and if you can find a suitable opening across the border, then decide where to go, if an opening is available. (OR Made available!)

Good Luck.

FH.

Thanks to all for your valued inputs.

@ Lemon925 - thanks I have already done that ground work . Learnt that Canada Government has very detailed statistics available for each class of occupation with indicative hourly wages . It helped a lot. It also gives a good detail on job prospects and outlook in different provinces.

I have posted a link here for other people

http://www.jobbank.gc.ca

Regarding weather woes.. I am up to enjoy some skiing and snow sports when I get there with friends like you Canada would be an easy place to settle .. besides I in general find Canadians more jolly than sarcy Brits ( though I love their sarcasm ..)

@ Rajcanada - Thanks again, you advise is surely in right direction. I will be taking one step at a time and won't give up my UK work permit in lieu of Canada PR.

I have assessed that Canada has a PR by invitation system but there is a PR category called skilled worker and PR by provincial nomination which does not need any invitation. Besides UK is currently becoming very restrictive and penalizing for professionals who are from Non- EU region. To an extent that they treat every one with same response disregarding their professional merits and education.

I am just putting my Express Entry profile and have scored about 435 points.

Hence the decision to look for other destination.

@ Full House - Thanks. I totally appreciate and understand your comments. I have come across many engineers from India and other countries who educated illiterate having no mannerisms and respect for local culture.

I have already done that ground work CIMA- Canada only offers mentor ship guidance to candidates one month prior to arrival.

Agencies are good, have tried my luck with them but no concrete information as they would only pay heed to localites . Unless I change my destination on CV from London UK to London Canada he he ..
I do have the cover of getting CMA,CPA(Canadian Chartered qualification) upon arrival in Canada which is a local finance qualification without any exams .

Regarding the Limeys count me in with you to settle scores with the Limeys when you have your day ..

Have had enough of them in last 8 years in UK..

I am trying to get the feel of the job market. Head Canada is in recession, I have survived UK recession in 2008 so would like to know the devil I that I am facing before I jump into the ring :)..

You all have been marvelous in guiding me. It would be lovely to hear more from you guys.

Regards
Pratik
