Hi
I received PPR today, so hopefully I'll land in September if everything goes fine.
However, I am very confused about where to land.
Firstly, something about me: I'm working as a Lecturer at a college in North India, and would be arriving in Canada alone (as I'm unmarried). I like cold weather but have never been to a place as cold as Canada.
I do not have any close friends or relatives living there. Just an online friend who lives in Calgary. But I think that it would not be wise to live in Calgary due to the poor economy of Alberta.
I would like to know about living in ON and BC. I think most of the immigrants choose these provinces when they arrive in Canada.
Is it easy to make friends and find safe places to live and work there?
How can I find a place to live while I'm still here? I've seen in many posts on craigslist that people ask for references before letting their property on rent.
I have hundreds of other questions (you can imagine how confused I am).
I have one request - please do not discourage me to go there (as was done once by a member on this forum).
Thank you!
First and foremost..: You want a job. Come here tomorrow. In September, the Schools will be in FULL FORCE. No more jobs and No one will be looking for a teacher for the next 10 months after September. So, look for alternate work or find a part time post.
NEXT..: Here we have Universities and Vocational Schools. What you call college there in India are Universities here in Canada. You can call professional schools here as Colleges.
ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS RECOGNIZED.. : As equal to the Canadian University level here. If not, you are back to square ONE.
Do you have a Teachers License. Is it also recognized here. If not Back to square TWO.
There is NO confusion. You land at a place where you can get a job. That is very simple.
You found your first friend. That is me. Full House.
When you first land, get a Paying Guest Accommodation for a few days. (Say a WEEK)
Get yourself organized. Find a suitable place where you can share rooms in a Condo. $500 - $600/m All inclusive. (You are single.. It should not matter if it is a Basement Apartment or in a High Rise one. No lease agreement.. ONLY the first and the last.)
FIND A JOB.
Then move out of that place and find another close by your job. A POSH One too.
You got 99 questions answered. Get a bottle of 'screech' and shoot a couple of good shots. That will pack enough courage for a day. Then pull up your socks and pound the pavement here till you settle down and post help to others here, like we all do. Your help will make some one else's day and also, your experience will be the freshest and the latest.
I will never ask you to go there. I will never ever ask anyone to do it too. I don't know where it is that s/he went but I heard them say it smells funny out there.
On that note, fire your questions away. Sorry only one more left out of the first hundred.
You have a great day.
FH.

Don't be too confused about anything. The practical reality is that Canada is in recession in most areas, if not heading in that direction. Your qualifications won't fetch you recognition much less a job in lecturing, unless this North-Indian college you speak of is of IIT caliber. Any teaching license, needed to practice teaching in High Schools, that you have is worthless because it will not be recognized here.
Do not be in a rush to arrive here, since your prospects of finding employment in teaching are nill. You will have to start by doing menial jobs for a few years. And work-out the ostentatious behavior that Indians are so quick to display. Be humble and start at the bottom and diligently work your way up. Since you are single, you may be able to survive well on simple jobs like security guard or grocery store shelf-stacker.
It is wonderful to know that you love cold weather, you would love it here. It is pretty much like sitting in a fridge half the year. Come on in, join the party, partner.

There are only 2 choices. Come to Toronto or vancouver and start doing retail / labour jobs. Then you can try to move up the ladder. Climate is OK. and tons of Desi.. Good proefssional jobs are scarce here. But with Desi's, may be someone can help you.
Second choice. Move to Fort MacMurray. Recently there was a deadly fire and now massive reconstrcution is there. Cold is too much but you can start with labour jobs and with MBA you can move to some professional jobs.
I am assuming that some teachers just relocated and hence those positions will be open.
