As NRIs, you should have use for currency of that particular country. In the first place why did you take suitcases load of old 500 and 1000 Indian rupee notes and which corrupt babu, neta or businessman gave them?

Seems like you are not able to understand the problem of NRIs. I usually visit India every alternative year. I usually convert the money in India through bank ATMs using my debit card. While returning back, I usually end up having few thousand rupees - around 5 to 10K because you cannot plan up to the last rupees. That remaining money I keep for the next visit because I need that money after landing in India next time to pay fare and to reach destination. What I wanted to consider the government of India for people like us. After repeated emails, there is no consideration of NRIs.
Now come to the impact. I guess there are around 800K Indian dispora families around the world. On average, if they have around 1K per family, the total will come to 80 crores of rupees - less than what was found at Reddy's house.
I also have around 10K in my closet. When Modiji will come to Canada next time, I will make a garland of those notes and present it to him.
If the exercise of demonetization helps in reducing the counterfeit currency in circulation.... thereby saving our soldiers and civilian lives at the border, bringing money hoarded by unscrupulous people into the banking system....which is expected to give a boost to the infrastructure and economy of India....are we going to cry about our few thousands? I acknowledge every penny is hard-earned, so we will make full effort to exchange / deposit the currency. If, in the worst case scenario, we lose a couple of thousands, can we not think this to be our small contribution to the betterment of the country that gave us everything?
I think, for far too long, we have forgotten that small inconveniences / sacrifices for the nation is actually a glory that we should all be willing to strive for.

Had a bundle of the big notes; wrapped it in tinfoil, packaged into sturdy envelop and off it went by courier.Told the folks use it. Next time will bring only a few 100s.
NaMo and BJP government are fighting with their backs to the wall because
(1) this exercise, unlike an annual Budget or even the earlier 1978 demonetization where only 2% of the currency was affected, had removed 85% and hence have entered deep water without gauging depth.
(2)if the DeMo is failure, the BJP government will go but as usual Sonia Gandhi will inherit all the dug out wealth when they form the next government and
(3)people like Rahul Gandhi, Chidambaram and Didi, suspect, are sabotaging by preventing the fresh notes from reaching the common man, to make NaMo and BJP more unpopular.
Yesterday, could read about Chidambaram openly inciting people to civil war.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/p-chidambaram-peoples-patience-may-not-last-past-this-month/articleshow/56149217.cms
May be Chidambaram has got the financial clout for a civil war but will not find "volunteers" to fight his battle and make him PM.
NaMo will be the last person to do something to lose his image which he has created among NRIs.
After Dec 31st, NaMo may suddenly announce a scheme, of a short time frame and limited to a few lacs, for NRIs who need to to deposit their old notes, so that the corrupt bandicoots in India do not have time to bring their "cargo" abroad.

Modi has misguided the Indian public on this. Terrorism & war with Pakistan will never end. No matter what the elites will tell you. India has faced jihad over 1000 years and what is happening is just a continuation of that struggle.
For, this is a war against jihad. The belief among the jihadist is this territory is Islamic and that the British cheated them when they left [and freed the kaffir (non believers) ].
That they are the rightful rulers of the subcontinent.
Moreover, today the whole word is faced with terrorism (e.g attacks in Berlin that killed so many).
In summary, demonetization is not the solution for jihad.
To combat, jihad human rights organizations need to fight to establish freedom of religion for all in the middle east. Let each person live the life they want without imposing views on others.
A good start would be with a church in Saudi Arabia. Hopeful this step will promote tolerance.
