A few things to keep in mind:

1) Not everyone visits once a year. For a family of 4 (eg), that will cost $6000 plus just on airfare. Other costs like gifts, travel within India build up.

2) Depositing the extra cash into NRO account. Not everyone has this. This is taxable in India (and needs to be reported to CRA) ... for income earned outside of Canada

3) Many folks have accumulated more than Rs25,000. Sometimes, when rupee becomes weak folks buy a little more than what is legally allowed. For example, in Nepal tons of rupees.

I know people will complain about the law allowing only Rs25K but we all know how many times Modi has broken the spirit (if not the law itself) whilst CM. Yet, today people forgave him, and made him PM.

So, since this money isn't terrorist or black money, Modi should in good faith allow NRI/OCI to exchange this. Remember, this exercise was done with the aim of punishing black money & terrorists.

Jai Hind.

I totally support this move, but not the execution and implementation of it.

For people abroad and NRI's the time line should be 1 year for the Rs. They have on them, as they only visit India once a year or so.

The limits ( Rs. 25,000 per person ) should be strictly enforced for the exchange as thats the limit for taking Rs. currency outside India, proper documentation and ID's should be checked before the exchange.

This will please the honest and hardworking and no black money NRI's like us. And at the same time stop corruption and black money.

Whatever Indian currency (Rs.) Are outside India belong to honest and hardworking NRI's, and very small amounts.
I know poor labourers who are stuck in gulf with 20,000 - 25,000 Rs. And they won't be visiting India for atleast a year due to their work contracts.

The black money and corrupt guys keep money outside India in foreign currency in tax heavens and untraceable places like Swiss accounts, Panama, Bahamas, Fiji, Dubai, Mauritius etc. They are not stupid to keep Rs. Outside India, its mostly $$$$ in USD.

In all seriousness, like someone mentioned, dont panic. The cutoff might get extended. If not depending on how much you are losing, make appropriate plan instead of writing on CD. You think PMO or people from India Embassy are reading CD?

In my books, Rs. 25000 is no less money. It amounts to $497 CAD and could be a two months grocery, or a laptop, or one month's car payment, etc.

Agree. It definitely adds up.

I personally, dont have that kind of cash in INR kept here in Canada. Some of my friends have close to 15k, not more. Some of them are willing to take the hit. Others plan to exchange it next year when they go to India in hopes of extension.

I meant Bure Din for common man. To spend $2000 trip (all ticket prices are now very high), to save less than $500. Is this Modinomics ?

Also, this is no surgical strike. This is carpet bombing (as Supreme court noted).

More drama to hide his inability to deliver.

Why are you talking about common man? When you left Canada, you became a NRI. If you took Canadian citizenship, thats a totally different classification.

For now, NRI or Citizens of other countries are not a priority for India. The govt is working towards helping the common man in India. Once that is settled, I am sure there will be some provisions for NRI's to get their INR exchanged. Remember, that a lot of Indian citizens still work in Gulf. Their interests will certainly be looked after ..soon... I hope.

Also, I agree, this move was carpet bombing on black money hoarders and black market.
