You have limited your options of receiving help from those who are not there.

If you had used a conjunction in your request such as "ALSO" *** in it I would have tried to find out more details and post the same to you. Hence it is limited to just those who are currently there, I will let them chime in and fill out the same for you.

You will get as much help from GOOGLE there in India as we do here.

Good Luck.

FH.

Hope this helps you get started.

Just to give you an idea, Halifax is the oldest established city in Canada. Land wise, it is a PENINSULA. No more room to expand and hence is crowded and OLD. Still developing.

The bedroom of Halifax is Dartmouth and also a small and expanding city called BEDFORD. A few locations there are old and a lot of the others are NEW. So, you do have a choice there. So choose wisely and enter into some thing better to live in. Your salary can well afford a better place. Initially get any place that does not ask for a 12 month lease. A little expensive, but it will be well worth it. After you find a job and settle down, get a place close to work. Preferably a very short ride to it.

After you land there, you will need an address, a phone number or two and all of the Banking facilities plus the SIN number to get started here in Canada. That will enable you to apply for all of the jobs and other benefits as time progresses. It is also good to have two good references there in Nova Scotia. Have you net worked with anyone there. If not look into old CD postings and see a few links. Post to them a PM through the CD web link. Leave it there for them to drop in and see it. Also look into Hindu Vedanta Society and pick up a few links through them.

Even if you do not drive, you can get an ID from the Motor Vehicle Department. Explore the possibilities of obtaining one. Costs about $18.00 good for 5 years.

A little help from the Immigration Department there in N.S.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/provincial/index.asp

http://novascotiaimmigration.com/resources/#live-here

Please contact them over the phone or by e-mail and let them know you will need a reference from them. So, introduce your self to them prior to arrival here into Canada.

Room Rentals will range from $400-500. Bachelors about $550 + and single BR will run you into $650 or more. All of these places, except single rooms, will have a kitchen with a fridge and a stove. Some buildings have internet also consult the Building Super-.(intendent) Heat is generally provided with the rent. Electricity will depend upon the location. Some are included. Or they will tell you when you sign the lease. A few newer rentals will have a dishwasher too. Some buildings will have coin operated laundry machines.

Look for all of the FLYERS in ATLANTIC Canada. Such as Sobeys, Food Basics, and No Frills. Then there are other local grocers such as IGA, Walmart too. Check the local news papers and the flyers in them. They normally appear on WEDNESDAYS. Walk and familiarize yourself with the Isles and the location of all of the products. A start up will cost you about $200. and subsequent supply as per choice, say $50 per week/$10 per day. Then cut down to suit your taste. Enjoy all of the ready to use food stuff for a stop gap. If you are a good cook and can plan well, then, you will make your life a lot easier. Also, Fruits as per choice. And if you are dropping in here with the better half, then you both will have a memorable start. It does not cost you much here to stay. But make sure that you are close to work and have a few friends nearby. The Apartments are all UNFURNISHED. Get an inflatable bed from WM or CT for starters. You are all set. Furnish after you settle down. No big items to lug when you move into a permanent place.

Here are a few links that we recommend everyone to look into for jobs. You will have to jot down the BIG Employers in there. Save them in your e-mail for later.

If there is internet service provider there in that building, then, they will provide you their services, UNLIMITED ONE preferably, for under $40, without a contract. But they will charge you $50 for 'the connection and billing' charges. Try to get on the Cable Systems. No hassles. You can also get a Magic Jack. It goes over the internet. Costs $35 plus tax. It is yours to keep. Plus $5-7/m for the number. $20/year. Mobile systems on 4G/LTE will cost you about $40/month. Check the local phone Companies there. Rogers, Fido, Bell and Freedom Phones are a few in there. Choose a good number and Hang on to it. Most of them are good all over Canada now.

For good Banking services, use P.C.Banking. They are the best. It might take a few months to get the check books, but get them after you SETTLE DOWN and have a good lease. Get a few Check leaves to get started.

If you already drive, then, get your DL from India. Also a good reference from your Insurance company. Validate your licence from the Motor Vehicles Department there in India. Tell them that you are heading to CANADA. Also see if you can get an International Driver's Permit from the Indian Automobile Association.

Please get a set of pictures, Passport size, from one of your local suppliers there in India before you travel. They will be a lot cheaper and convenient to carry in person. See they also comply with the Canadian requirements.

Print this and carry with you and tick each item off as they are completed.

Good Luck.

FH.

There are about 3000 S.E.Asians there.

Halifax is not a big city.
1) Good place to raise family.
2) IT jobs are limited.
3) Overall boaring place as nothing much to do.
4) Development is very slow as ruled by older generation.
5) Majority of immigrants take Atlantic canada as a gateway, come here build your work experience and then move out to either Ontario, Alberta. I would not even think of other provinces if you are coming from South East Asia.
6) Look at the trend crime rates would remain less in Halifax when compared to Toronto,Vancouver, Calgary.
7) Real estate is still affordable however Chinese are here to change that.
8) Most of downtown is slowly being taken over by Chinese.
9) If you like sea food and natural beauty then this is the place to be.
10) If you prefer wasting your life in crowded trains or buses travelling 1-2 hours each day each way then go look for jobs in ON/AB/BC.
11) I have lived in most of Canada and like it here --as I said less crime, people are nice, simple and great place to raise family.
12) You just need 2-3 good friends in any place and you start liking it, we haven't really found one however we are hopeful.

Forgot to mention: Don't live anywhere near Gottingen Street ----rest you are good to live anywhere that you can afford. Most Indians live near Scotia Square apartments---- 2 reasons for that----Indian food in food court and NTT data IT company and walking distance everywhere in downtown.

99% of the families live as a single family unit. Can`t speak for the other 1%.

Rooming houses are mostly bachelors, with a few fruits thrown in, So, watch out.

From 1st of May to end of August, you can find accommodation in the University Dorms also. If you like that environment. Not a soul to talk to on many a days, except on the week ends. You might also run into your country man or one from the same community also. You will do better after you find a JOB and then look for a single BR apartment in a complex. Get you own set of wheels and Entertainment system with Android box etc., and then..Get set in your own routines after that. That will be an enviable living.

FH.
