I have a relative who has 8 pre paid SIM cards lying around with him.

Whenever friends and relatives from US come to visit India, he gives them the cards to use.

The relatives add whatever money they want and whatever plan they want to it and put it in their US phones after removing their US SIM cards.

Cellular Data & Cellular Calls are much cheaper in India than Canada or USA.

For Rs 300 - $ 6 CAD, you can get unlimited cellular data plan with Reliance JIO for 28 days . 1 GB per day - so 28 GB for 28 days at high speed, and speed reduces after 1 GB per day cap is reached , but still remains unlimited & no extra charges.

Canada is a backward country where Rogers, Bell, Telus will charge you $ 60 ++ for 6 GB of cellular data per month. Plus ridiculous overage charges if you go above that.

While India is giving you 28 GB data for $ 6 - Rs. 300 for a month . And the speed & quality is better than Canada ! If you go above 28 GB, no extra charges, just the speed is reduced :)

Make sure your phone is unlocked, otherwise the Indian SIM or any other carrier SIM won't work in it.

If your phone handset is locked to Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Koodo etc, get it unlocked. You can get it unlocked for quite cheap in Canada for less than $ 5 . Or you can get it unlocked in India if you want.

Mobi free or even Ebay is a good site for unlocking phones.

By cheap phone in India, if you mean a non-smart phone in India, then it will be between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000. It will be like those old fashioned phones 10-15 years back.

But if you need a cheap Smart Phone, it won't be less than Rs. 5,000 for a reasonable one, mostly Chinese brands.

Do you want to spend that much ? Especially when the prepaid SIM card is only Rs. 150 for unlimited local calling & 2 GB data for 28 days.

Better to unlock your Canadian phone for less than $ 5 or use a spare phone lying around with your friend for 2 weeks and put the Rs. 150 SIM card in it. No need to buy a phone in India.
