Peel School Board Area

My daughter is in grade 5 French Immersion. She loves learning french and she is pretty good at it. Now it is time to think about IBT/IB etc. One thing I found out is that if you want to go to these regional programs you have only one school for your area and if you are selected, then there is no more french immersion, it would be just English.

Two questions

1. What is better for Kids future? French Immersion OR IBT?
2. I read online about university admissions. Looks like most weight for admission is on kids Grade 12 grades. So, if you went through IBT school and later on in Grade 12 your kid gets 90% and then another kid gets 92%, Kid with 92% will get admission if cut off is at 91%. There is no weight for IBT program here.

Any feedback, specially from personal experience would be highly appreciated.

I love to learn languages, and when I get a good grasp of it, flash away with a few high flung words and make me look educated and in many a circle, it made me look very proficient. That is my nature and I do not want to generalize the same.

Now to the nitty gritty, This TOEFL iBT is nothing but an Internet based Exam to test the student. Just to make it more clear, the uppity neighbors of ours who insisted that we all have to be bi-lingual to make it fair to their ORIGINS, made us all learn the French Language in the schools. On the contrary, even to this day, they will not teach English in their school system to their students who live and work.

This became a great disadvantage for those who wanted to enter into the University systems and for the well-paying jobs and get into other faculties in there. So, when they wanted to get in, they found that there are no equivalent words in their language and hence NO books in the system to learn their subject matters in those Universities. That was a BIG Hurdle and the students did not even want to enter into the Higher Education System. It is nice to stick to your guns, but they could not use them or shoot with it. So, they slowly started to bend the rules and now the Universities are looking to see a student more proficient in the language for their entry that is for those who are taught in the schools with French as their First Language. Based upon this, they used the same whip to flog all of the foreigners who want to enter into the Universities here as their system of education for those new entrants was in their own Mother Tongue.

YES, we all claim that we speak very good English and also write very good English but we read diddly squat to keep up with it. So, what is it that we all speak or write here? it is a form of PIGEON English. We do not take the necessary care in expressing, as long as it sounded equal or the same. We got by with it and NO One questions it here or anywhere. That is due to the attitude that we show towards it and we do not want to change our habits nor want to understand the difference.

So, it was O.K. to learn French in the Immersion system and reach a level of proficiency that you can acquire here in the schools. Now for the next leg of the schooling in Ontario, it will be appropriate to take the English Based Education system that will take them to the University level and if you can ask them to read a few of the well known and tested literature to enhance their ENGLISH from here on, it will supplement to their schooling and tweak it to the next level. They can do it too. It will pay good dividends when they enter the Universities after completion og Grade 12. The main system of education in English takes precedence over the iBT, because it is only an ancillary means of testing of the students to see how well they did while they were studying it. As you say, it does not get added to anything.

So, what does it tell you? It is only a test as to how dumb ONE was to take a French Immersion and show them that you were 30% dumb, by scoring 70% in iBT. That was my observation too all along and you have it from here in my earlier paragraphs. I will say that your observations are 100% correct.

IB is international baccalaureate program. In public schools, this will be primarily in grade 11 and 12 and it is quite intense from what I hear as compared to usual school board curriculum. IBT looks like a specific program in Peel Board in some schools for Grades 6 to 8. I am not sure how do you connect IBT to IB.

Thanks for responses. In Peel Board, both IB and IBT are offered so that is why I am looking for suggestions. TOEFT iBT is not applicable here. However, very good feedback about French immersion.

Also, both IB and IBT are now offered at primary level and then at high school level. First entrance is at grade 6 for primary program and then second entrance at grade 9. Both times you have to apply to see if you are eligible.

After much thought, going for IBT entrance. There is acceptance criteria so if that goes well and she is selected, we will go for it. If not, continue with French immersion.

I did find out that there is no extra weight for grades if you go through IB or IBT. Still think IBT would be helpful to keep the kid busy and workload will be challenging.

I also really love learning languages. Recently, I started helping to teach English to others, such as the children in the neighborhood. I recently read a post here https://studymoose.com/english about the language when preparing for our first lesson. After all, the child needs to be told the importance of learning in order to motivate and show that it is interesting!
