hello,

i will be visiting my parents in India soon after many years.
i will be there for about 1 month.
i am staying at my parents house, it is in Delhi.

i need Wifi Internet access while I am there.

What are the options?

My parents house doesn't have any type of internet access.

I don't want to buy a new cell phone there and I don't want to swap the SIM card in my Canadian cell phone.

ideally, what I need is like one of those Wifi sticks or routers I can just plug in the house and have wifi internet access.
paying for the service is not an issue...my company will cover the cost.
I just need some good, reliable options for video conference calls etc.

thanks in advance.

1. jio Wi Fi Dongle for Rs. 1,000 + 28 day plan which start from Rs. 149.

https://www.jio.com/shop/en-in/jmr-1140/p/491193574

Unlimited internet and no surprise charges from Rs 149.

They have 1.5 Gb, 2 Gb, 3 Gb etc per day plans for 28 days, 70 days, 84 days etc.

https://www.jio.com/en-in/4g-plans

Once you reach the daily cap depending on the plan, it is still free, just the speed will be reduced.

You can connect upto 10 devices to it via WiFi. Very fast and very reliable. You can connect your cell phone, tablet, laptop to it.

You can even carry it with you in your pocket and use it as WiFi wherever you go for your cell phone.

Jio Fi just go for the pre-paid

2. If you want to save money and not buy the JioFi dongle.

Then just get the Jio Sim card and the plan and use your smart phone as a hot spot device.

So your phone basically becones a wi fi router and you can run your lsptop and tablet of it by tethering to it.

If company is paying then go for the highest plan.

Rs. 799 for 28 days, since you are there for only a month.

You will get 5 GB/ day , so total 140 GB for 28 days. 5 GB/ day is more than enough.

Rs. 1,000 for the JioFi dongle is additional. Or you can use your smartphone as a dongle by tethering and creating a hot spot. But better to just buy the dongle.

Vodafone, Airtel, Aircel hsve similar plans and dongles. Ask local people which network has the best reception in your area.

Some areas Vodafone or Airtel reception/speed/network is good and some areas Jio is good and so on. But the plans and prices and dongles are pretty much the same.

Jio is by Mukesh Ambani and Reliance.

Thanks Mitron for your informative posts.
I have to check what kind of coverage Jio has in my area in Delhi.
Airtel should have good coverage.

do you think it is better to just buy a 4G enabled cell phone with lots of data and just use that as a hotspot around the house?
I can just connect my computer and cell phone to the hotspot wifi.

the cost of the cell phone will be extra, but is this a better option?

sorry for the basic questions....I am not a techie...

thanks.

Yes, you can use that. But generally the phone battery drains faster when you use it as a hot spot and phone also heats up a bit.

So either you have to keep the phone plugged in while using it as a hot spot or recharge it 2-3 times a day.

But the advantage is that you can use the same phone and same number as your local indian phone and local Indian number. Also when you go out of the house you have a data plan on that phone with you for browsing.

If you already have a spare unlocked phone lying around with you take it with you, no need to buy a new one and use it as a hot spot.

I wouldn't use my main expensive Canadian phone like say Apple or Samsung for hot spot as I don't want to spoil the battery in the long run.

But a cheap phone lying around - like a travel phone I will use it, if I don't want to buy a dongle or USB type of internet stick.

If you are just going to use internet 3-4 hrs a day, the phone as a hot spot will be more than enough.

But if you are going to use it 10 hrs a day, better to have a WiFi dongle or stick.

Leave the dongle behind for your parents and for your future visits.

There are strict verification of ID for purchasing any Wifi items. Aaadhaar card is asked these days. So you have to buy this, using your parents as a front.

Only tops ups / monthly payements are a breeze. All other, you need passport sized photo, Aadhaar card and there will be a verification call.
