I was reading the \"south indian food sucks\" entries which led to an interesting tangent on \"banning of indecent language for ids\" and at the end I was burning to say something. I tend to only speak about things here if I'm moved to passion. (is that word allowed?)

The site was locked. You do that? Why? Seriously, is there a way for the person who locks something to put a little blurb up saying why? It was like hitting the end of the universe... bloink... I could hear the pebble I kicked off the edge in frustration hitting ground 30 metres below.

Just a few notes on the original topic. I'm a sexy vixen. And I'm pretty sure my husband thinks so too. I didn't choose that word as a moniker but it certainly does not offend. I might raise my eyebrows quizically wondering why someone would on this site, but it would end there. I know a lot of families with children, some of my cousins are in their young teens and on the computer. I don't know a single one who hasn't heard, used or mostly ignored the word sexy. It's become that generally in use. Big yawn. I think the last time I heard a giggle in response to that word was from a five year old. But then she giggles when I say underpants.

I don't think it's a bad idea to censor if your purpose is to become a site with a particular use and with a narrowly defined audience and membership.

But if you are interesting in sharing of info, ideas, viewpoints, knowledge and everything else of interest betweeen Canadian Desis of all kinds, then perhaps part of the learning goes to cultural evolution in all it's shades of grey.

I think I have a lot to learn about my cultural roots by reading the various viewpoints here, both open and closed minded. I kind of like seeing all the extremes of opinions and all the interesting points of conflict. It's quite an interesting microcosm. If however, as a person not offended by sexy vixen and feeling quite normal in my reaction, I was to think that I was at a site where the majority did see something to be shameful of in that, I can't say that I would be much interested in contributing much or reading much. It would be a little boring if nothing else. But more significantly, I would feel unwelcome. And I would have lost something of interest and beauty to me.

I came from an extremely extremely traditional upbringing. My parents raised me definitely not to be a sexy vixen. At least not until I was married. But thank god they followed my lead in becoming more and more open minded as I brought more and more of the not-so-evil culture we were living in home with me.

My parents are almost 70 now, and though my Mom was raised not even to call my Dad by his real name (she still doesn't), they can often be found strolling hand in hand down Gerard Street and boy, my Mom sure is one sexy vixen!

Regardless, my only point is that I would hope that a natural censorship will take hold here, and that the site will grow wholistically and organically. I will definitely be part of it if it does.

Pinky :) I would just direct you to one more thread that addresses this issue..as for that word... No matter what you say.. It is an OBSCENE word period and as so many respected members have pointed out, this site MUST be kept clean ! (please ignore the ranting made against me though... I ignored them :D)

The thread that I am referring to is here
http://www.canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=3804

As a good desi, I would recommend that you divert your mid out of such OBSCENE thoughts and instead focus on "GOOD" things , e.g., the Amar Chitra Katha thread that I started .. If you read that article you will understand what I am talking abt :)
Cheerz
*ps :- and promise never to use the S-word ! :D

Allow me to quote MI:
"Thats the beauty of freedom of speech, the more we try to stifle it the louder it will get."

Just today I wrote thisto someone(you know who you are ;) ) who was asking me about my muted involvement here

" Too much going on at my end. I try to read the forums but am thinking that its too conservative for the likes of me. All this makes for lack of motivation to 'make' the time for active involvement in cdesi."

However, voices like yours do make me think twice(probably to the chagrin of our fine 'respectable' folk). I too do get the feeling that this forum is turning into a site with a with a narrowly defined audience and membership. Maybe rightly so, but for the record(incase there is any ambiguity about my stand) *I object*.
In all probability, it's a lost cause. As they say ...I had to 'speak now or forever hold my peace' :p

I really could not understand what you are trying to prove or say here.. kinda hard to understand for a narrow minded person like me.

Are you trying to say that all forum members should see you the way your husband see you????? Otherwise why would you mention this, as far as I know all husbands treat their wives like Cleopatra…isn’t it?

Thanks and regards.
Biomed

Pinki Blinky,

A nice post indeed with good explanation about idealogies of various generations/cultures/regions of the world.

However, as a parent, or as a person who has held reasonably senior level management positions, I would say it is not always a particular act or word which elders/seniors object to, but most of the times, it is the thought process behind that act or word which seems to be the thing to be supressed. Some things are such which if not objected to in the initial stage, keeps growing and that becomes something unlikeable, though the original act by itself will seem harmless.

An example of that would be as below:

Quote:

sexy is just another word for \\\"good-looking\\\". and please don't criticisize good-lookin' now that why not use beautiful instead.

oh yeah by the way u biomed, the word sexy has nothin' to do with SEX

-----------------------------
hate blaster

this shows how things have changed where the world sexy is just considered a synonym for good looking. Now if I were to say anything about any particular person, it would be considered a post in bad taste, so I will use first person. If I were to go to my mother (may her soul rest in peace) and say - wow mom, you are sexy! can you imagine what would happen in an Indian household/society? And you might not find it objectionable - but since my mother did not understand English, I would have had to say - ma, tum to cheez lag rahi ho - a crude translation of the English phrase. I rather not make a guess what the American mothers' reaction might be since I have not observed them so closely.

Another thing that you should have noticed in that thread was how coolly some of the members easily made a mockery of persons coming from a village or Bihar. Now, if genocide is considered horrundous compared to a single murder, shouldn't someone making mockery of a whole state/people coming from villages, and people of the 60s and 70s be considered doing a more vulgar act than my targeting only one person? I consider it both a community attack and a personal attack since I am from 70s and from a village.

Elaborating on the matter of culture - this is one thing which in my opinion should not change whereever you go. Culture is not something which you should change just like a dress based on the occassion. So if we Indians/desis have grown with the thought that sexy is a word which should not be spoken in public and no such references be made on a public forum, we can never change our values. And this is one thing every member of this forum should realise - never make fun of someone's value system, especially if it not of an individual, but a whole society or a group of persons.

And if someone does - the only way I understand to deal with it is to make a personal attack - which I have done in another post - because I was personally offended though the ishara was towards Biomed's post. And when that is done, neither the person attacked, nor other readers should be offended because the fault is of the person who started making fun of others by belittleing (I am sorry - what is the right word for it?) them.

And in the end - why come to this site to talk such things when you can do it on a million other sites and where you know that members of those sites not only not mind it, but consider you cool for using those words. The managers of this site have made it for a community purpose - not for using as any other chat room. If someone cannot help them in achieving their purpose- why unnecessarily trouble them and the users?
