A university student has been expelled after he masqueraded as a woman to enter his lover's hostel and was caught, not by a vigilant matron but by the hostel's cobbler!

His girlfriend was expelled too following an investigation that lasted six months.

It all happened six months ago when Moloy Mondal took a leaf out of Shakespearean comedies to meet his sweetheart -- only this time it was a man who took on the disguise of a woman.

The post-graduation student of Bengali at Presidency College had been in love with Chhaya Mondal, also a student of Bengali at Calcutta University.

The woman lived in a girls' hostel that barred the entry of men under all circumstances. But this did not deter the beau who decided to gain access by posing as a woman.

So Mondal took on the look of an elderly woman, complete with sari and blouse.

He then knocked on the doors of V.L. Mitra Hostel where Chhaya lived.

Getting past the security guard and the strict matron didn't pose a problem. He said he was an aunt from her village and wanted to meet her.

The lovers spent some time together in the room. But Mondal got unlucky because of an eagle-eyed cobbler who had a shop outside the gates of the hostel.

He told the matron about his suspicions and an investigation began. The lovers were still together when the matron and other students barged into their room.

To their astonishment, Mondal was sitting on the floor with his shirt and trousers showing through the folds of his sari.

The matter was brought to the notice of Calcutta University and Presidency College.

After six months of investigations, the inspector of colleges last month asked the university and college to expel the two students. The two, who were expelled last week, were held guilty of a "serious kind of offence".

Mondal is a bright student who recently topped his class in the MA Part-I examination. Chhaya is also a meritorious student.
