Hi all,
Can some one explain about the difference between G , G1 and G2 licenses.
I have dubai (U.A.E) driving license and can I get my license transfered in Canada? What is the procedure to get the license in canada? What are the precautions to be taken as a new license holder?
Thanks and regards
V.Rama Swamy
There is a Grduated Licensing Process in Ontario, Canada to get driver's license. Unfortunately, you can not transfer your Dubai license direct to Canadian license but the ministry will give you the exemption of waiting period for getting your G2 or G license. Graduated licensing works:
When you become 16 (for Canadians), you are eligible to take learners license (G1). You pass a written test and you get it. after G1, you have to wait for minimum 12 months to get G2 license so that you can start driving the car independently. But if you are taking Driver's Training Certificate from a Ministry approved school, your waiting period is reduced to 8 months. After getting G2, you can go in for G license which is considered full license.
But if you have back home experience for more than 2 yrs, you do not have to wait 8 months or 1 year and more over you are eligible to take G license straight. BUT FROM INSURANCE POINT OF VIEW, TAKING G DIRECTLY IS AN DISADVANTAGE. Because then the insurance companies would say : YOU DO NOT HAVE CANADIAN DRIVING EXPERIENCE. So even if you are eligible to take G directly, I would advise, do not go for that. Take G1 first, also get Driver training Certificate, if you can wait for 8 months, thats fine other wise take G2, start driving the car and then after few months, take G license. that way, you get discounts for DTC as well Graduated Licensing process which you may not be eligible for if you take G straight without DTC.
The logic behind the 'DISADVANTAGE' is that if you compare your situation with a Canadian born person, he will have to wait more to be able to drive the car where as you come today and start driving tomorrow. Why should the insurance companies give you the same rates which they would give to a person who has waited and has Canadian driving experience????

Thanks a lot Mr sanjeevm,
G1 is a learner's license , G2 is the license with which you can drive independently and G is the full license.
Is there any restriction for G2 license holders that they should not enter Highways etc., What is the difference between G2 and G.
In India or even in U.A.E., we have learner's license and a license. that is it.
Why is this G2 existing in Canada? Could you please explain.
Thanks a lot once again

Visit MTO site and you will get all information. You can search in google for the site or it is listed on this site under "Useful Canadian Links"
With G2 there are only two restrications:
Your alchohol level must be zero
The number of passengers in your car must be limited to number of working seat belts.
This is what I know so far.
You can drive on highways without any restrications with G2.

You are right, Garvo. There are only these two restrictions with G2. Lot of peole have a misconception that they can not drive on highways with G2 license whereas it is wrong. I drove on highway right on the same day, I got my G2.
Actually, this all has been created mostly by our own people and that too mostly by driving instructors because they want you to take the test as quickly as possible (chances of failure and re-appear are more ) and that too with many lessons so that they can make good money.
