Question for Vishal..
First of excellent piece of info given by vishal about digital camaras.
I have bought Canon Power Shot A95 digital camara from Future Shop last week.I was also aware that i have to buy an additional Compact Flash memory to capture maximum photographs when iam in an outing.I want to ask which company CF card i shoud buy for 256MB memory for my Canon A95.I have heard that there are quite few bunch of companies make this cards like Sandisk,Lexar,Kingston my main concern what speed of read/write card i should look in any of these companies.I also want to go for the most lower end basic CF card which sud work fine with my Canon A95.
Vishal can u throw some light on this part too
Thanks

Thanks for your compliments.

A digi SLR should cost about 1300 $ + taxes + accessories.

Before I answer your question do try to understand more about the digital memory. For benefit of the group I would share my experience in greater detail and answer your question in the last para of this posting.

It is important for you to note the difference between a cheap memory card and getting good value for money. As if life was not complicated with electronics, various manufacturers decide to use their own format and we have about 9 different format of cards available. This is an important thing to consider once again, when you are buying a digital camera. WHY?? Well if you compare the prices of digital memory they are not the same for the same format (considering same size and make). XD cards are more expensive ( Fuji and Olympus camera users would know that), Smart media cards are very difficult to find in different sizes. By far my experience is that compact flash cards are the least expensive, very reliable and are available in different sizes and speeds. SD cards are also a good choice and have more versatality in the sense that it could be used with various devices such as PDA's, camcorders and MP3 players. It would be important to note that digital memory is designed to last forever - literally it is supposed to have life of over 100 years.

However there are instances where the digital memory got corrupted and all the stored data was lost. This is because of misuse, the card getting corrupted or simply using a cheap memory card. I usually find memory cards from generic brands Sandisk and Lexar to be more reliable. Other OEM's such as Sony, Olympus, Fuji and Kodak also have their own branded cards. They may be more expensive then generic brands but are also reliable. Digital memory from Sandisk and Lexar is equally reliable and a good buy. Stick to this and you would not have major problems down the line.

The other issue is speed of the memory card. Many cards such as compact flash card, SD card and memory stick come in differnt speeds. Generally higher the speed the better, because you get faster processing of the image and this can reduce the time between taking two pictures. Also the transfer to you PC should be faster. Ultra high speed cards which can transfer images at 10 MBPS are also available. I highly recommend use of this cards for higher resolution cameras. The reason being that as the resolution of the camera increases, it would increase the file size for each picture you click. Using a standard speed memory card would seem like it is taking ages for digitizing an image and clicking the next picture. It would be prudent to spend some extra bucks in getting higher speed cards so that the processing is speedy.

For the Canon A 95 I would recommend a minimum of 256 MB card and a ultra high speed card from Sandisk or the 12X speed card from Lexar. The Sandisk card is more expensive but is faster. Hey you just spent over 700 bucks on a camera, now do not spoil the fun with a cheap card. Instead look out for a deal. These memory cards go on sale every now and then and you only need to wait to have the best at the least possible cost.

Happy clicking
