afaik ,anybody who really WANTS to be sucessfull , will be! In ways the person cannot even dream of. It has to start with a dream. The question is how much do you really want it and if you are going to let reality come in the way.
Again this is a personal conviction. There is no right and wrong. In my world...Dreams which leads to thoughts which leads to words and actions leads to reality.

Ok...here is me, just for the sake of discussion. I am middle aged, wear glasses for weak eyesight, not physically fit, have diabetes or some such problems like angina or whatever.
My dream is to become an astronaut.
Now please tell me how can I realize my dream?

For the sake of discussion? Sure :)

Again how much do you really Want to do it?

Do you want to be an astronaut bad enough that you are realdy to raise the capital to attempt something like this?
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/06/21/suborbital.test/

Or maybe do you want it bad enough to be able to sell someone the idea of using you as a guinea pig for tests to determine cures/treatment in space.

Do you want it bad enough to FIND a way instead of asking me, who has no aspirations on being an astronaut?
Do you want it bad enought to think in terms of solutions rather than problems? Or to look for opportunities within the problem? AND have fun doing it?

I cannot give you answers...its your dream, you find the answers.

Plus you’ve gotta draw a line between dream and fantasy. This line’s again highly subjective and what may be a dream for one is a fantasy for another.

I would agree that you don’t become automatically successful by reading stories like those of a deaf Frog or Edison. All they do is provide inspiration and a spike in self-belief. You have to mix it up with your hard work to make a potent cocktail otherwise you’ve only got inspiration that will eventually wear off.

Also, it may be common knowledge that staying positive in life helps but when surrounded by grim circumstance (when you need inspiration the most), people don’t automatically remember to be positive. It is not a reflex. For most of us, dealing with the problem at hand becomes an obsession that clouds rational thinking that could’ve helped us resolve the problem more efficiently in the first place.

That’s where stories like these provide the fuel to carry on. Helping to build positive attitude gradually as a reflex. I would not call such conditioning blind optimism.

There ARE no answers! Did you not read what I said? In the hypothetical situation that I suggested, I said I have physical disabilites that prevent me from becoming an astronaut. No amount of "positive" attitudde is going to overcome that. In exactly the same way, every person is brought up differently and carries with him a certain mental and psychological mind set. You know that thing we call "personality"? It is whole combination of so many things that lead to form his "personality". He is capable of doing some things and just not capable of others. Having him listen to stories of success will certainly help in elevating his depression and despondency. It may also inspire him to try and put in more efforts. Sure! But that does not guarantee success, because the success my friend is a product of several other things.
Please do not misunderstand me. I am NOT denying the need to have a "positive" attitude. I have said this earlier too, and I will say it again - It is certainly necessary, but there is only so much that it can help!
This talk of "positive" attitude is advantageous and most appropriate for those who have already taken the plunge, have immigrated and are struggling here. My post earlier was intended for people who have not YET landed here. It was for those who still have a choice of coming here or staying back in their home country and continuing with what they are doing. At this juncture, where they have a choice to make, the concept of "positive" attitude should be tempered and not allowed to divert attention or cloud realities and facts. At this turning point where they have options to choose, they should concentrate more on evaluating EXISTING facts, their self assessment, what they stand to lose vs what they expect to gain, weigh all factors that are actual and real etc. At this cross-roads of life, "positive" attitude should not be allowed to influence the decision any more than necessary. Yes, AFTER having done the necessary spade work about everything else, if and when they do decide to immigrate, THEN the "positive" attitude thing should be allowed to kick in all the way, because that's when it will help. Anytime earlier it is allowed to influence pragmatic analysis of facts and figures, it can do more bad than good.

Hmm...I figured carry on would imply that we're way past the ignition stage already. :)

BTW: All aspiring astronauts can sign up here. A 90 yr old may probably be on the flight.Would be interesting to know if he "wears glasses for weak eyesight, not physically fit, have diabetes or some such problems like angina or whatever"
