This message is for all ya wannabe Desi's who want to apply for Masters degree courses in Canadian Universities. You can easily be swayed by marketing Gimmicks (like U of Windsor etc.)..But pls.. be a lil bit cautious. This is your future at stake. You do not want to ruin your future. Now below, I will list some Universities in Canada, that are good for Engineering... YOu decide what you want to choose. These are my own choices, based on how reputable the Universities are, what kind of research activity goes on the Universities and what kind of profs are there..I will base it on Electrical Engg/Comp Engg/Comp Sci only.

I sincerely urge others, from other departments to please post their opinions about other departments in these Universities

BC:-

UBC ( http://www.ubc.ca )
SFU ( http://www.sfu.ca )
UVIC ( http://www.uvic.ca )

Incidently, the first two universities are quite famous.. You even need a GRE for getting admission to these universities.

Alberta :-

U of A ( http://www.ualberta.ca ).. Very good program in Elec engg/Comp engg and Petroleum Engg

U of C ( http://www.ucalgary.ca ).. Avoid the Elec and Comp engg department. Their Petroleum/Chemical engg program is quite well known. In addition, The Geomatics dept. is one of a kind in North America

Saskatchewan :-
*yawn*..(unless u want to pay less fees and are desperate for a degree)

Manitoba :-
*yawn* *yawn*

Ontario :- :-)
Waterloo ( http://www.uwaterloo.ca )
Toronto ( http://www.utoronto.ca )
Queens ( http://www.queensu.ca )
McMaster ( http://www.mcmaster.ca )
Ottawa-Carleton ( http://www.ociece.ca )

The rest of the universities should be avoided for Elec./Comp/Comp-Sci. However,
York ( http://www.yorku.ca ) and
Western Ontario ( http://www.uwo.ca )
have good programs in MBA....

Quebec :-
If you are from Pondicherry/Yanam/Karaikal (in India), then you can easily get admission to any French Lang schools in Quebec. Furthermore, you can also get your PR status, more easily that other desis..Why ? Thats cos you know French !!!

McGill ( http://www.mcgill.ca ) ..Good programs in Robotics and Elec Engg/Comp Sci
Concordia ( http://www.concordia.ca )... *yawn*... except for their Avionics program that they run jointly with McGill.. If you are interested in a career in Avionics, then these are the two universities to be applying to.

The other provinces...*yawn* !!!
So take your pick !
Any further info from others... Pls do share them here !

Hi Ottawa_nerd,
As per your guidelines I enquired the graduate studies dept. of UoT,and they say I can join in as a full or part-time special student and take 2 individual graduate courses at the most. For that,July 30th is the deadline and the application procedure is same as for applying for masters. As you know my masters application was rejected by UoT last year..do you think..sending the same application(with some improvements ofcourse...)..could get me admission in an individual course as a special student??
She told me the assesment of applications is done differently and for "special student" its little lenient. But,there were still some doubts as to which courses to choose??[ i need the one's available at UoT(Miss.) campus coz its near my place],how to transfer the credits, course fee etc..and i asked if there was some educational counsellor i could talk to ..but she said they dont have one.
Can you please tell me which person should I approach to in the university
that can explain me this whole concept of "special student"...I searched the UoT website..but coudn't gather much information.
Being a ex-canadian univ. student..i am looking forward for your input on this.
I really appreciate all your help.
Thanks

p.s:Can I also apply to York U as a special student..thou u didnt stated it in your goodies list..the univ.is near my place.

Hameek... first of all you decide what do you want to do later on with ur career. A special student is another name for a part time student. I cannot choose the courses for you as I was not in Comp Sci .. So I dont know what you are interested in. However, I think if you revamp your CV and your statement of purpose (e.g., how doing these courses can help you find a better job or help you in ur academic career).. I think they will be looking for these stuff..

I have no clue abt YorkU...esp the Grad program in Comp Sci.. SO thats why I did not say anything abt York. I did, however, say that their MBA was excellent.

Dan..when you know that a University comes to your town as part of an "educational fair"..you know its cheap..mega cheap !...I dont see UofT/UBC ever coming to town as part of such "educational fairs"...Windsor does !

Its time losers like Ottawa_Nerd stop defaming Ryerson , Windsor and other univs/colleges which "suck" according to him . Like who the hell are you to misguide people here ? I hate this attitude of desis who cry over everything in canada , yet they want to be in canada . Unlike India , all Canadian univs/colleges get accredited by the govt if they conform to certain minimum standards . Moreover , almost all univs are public and hence certain levels of integrity is maintained . And getting admission for masters is very tough here in Canada for students with bachelors from India . A minimum average of 70% is required to get into any of these univs . An Indian average of say 55% in BE at say Mumbai Univ (which is considered to be decent in India) will land you nowhere here .

Ottawa_Nerd fails to take into account everyone is not a topper . Sometimes you have to compromise for univs commensurate with your academic capabilities . That doesnt mean its a waste of time and money .
It seems he blindly goes by rankings . Infact , his own univ @ ottawa is in bottom heap of macleans ranking . Does that mean it sucks ?! Too much blatant generalisation there . he doesnt even know automotive engg is not offered in every univ . Infact I think its just a couple of them . Wrong advice .

You can make your own destiny , no matter where you are .

Starchaser...thanks for the update. There is nothing to cry abt in Canada. Its just a fact ! You have to face the fact. Now when did I say Ottawa-Carleton was "the best" Uni ? Go on and read my posts from the very beginning... If I were to go by rankings then I would be seriously misjudging !...Mcleans is a crappy ranking system and I do not take that into acct anyways. In fact, once upon a time, they had U of Windsor in one of their scales and U of T was absent !!!! Now surely, you can trust McLeans rankings.
http://www.macleans.ca/universities/article.jsp?content=20041104_163511_5512
No Waterloo !! for Doctral degrees !!! Now surely thats interesting..

(Just felt like posting this, as you had quoted McLeans rankings ! Goes to show, I do not go by McLeans rankings)

Being accredited and being "well recognized" are two different things (if you didnt know). If that was the case, all accredited universities would have been reputable. Being reputed comes from the amount of funding you get, the publications, what kind of research work is going on there etc.

Your logic will hold true in Universities in Europe (esp Germany, Sweden...) where the education system is quite different from Canada/USA... Your logic does not hold good in Canada.

When I made those rankings, I explicitly said that they were my own choices, and that too for a specific degree in Elec/Comp/Comp-Sci.

Your other statement of "getting admission to Canadian Universities is tough"...I agree with that fact.. Which is the very reason I have avoided U of Windsor and Ryerson and those other universities from the list. They come in the same category as some "accredited" yet "not reputed" universities in the USA...

As for Automotive Engg..I gave him the info what I knew...In fact you have not even given any info at all. If you take the time you can easily provide us with all info. Whereas I was correct abt McMaster... you, my friend, should provide us some alternates....
Check out this link (and would request others also to check it).
Now dont tell me GM is not an automotive major :D
http://email.gmcanada.com/corpdb/cachq/pressrel.nsf/0/bc0ff0e330036d518525696d007112bf?OpenDocument

So what i told sam_46 abt McMaster is absolutely right ! Not only he gets a good program to study, he also may be eligible for a scholarship + he gets a McMaster brand name with him.... Of cos, he can come and work in the companies located in Windsor ! He must and he will definately get a scope of doing that.
You on the other hand surely do not want him to have that do you :D ?
