Megahal..one of the last compositions of SD

"Dil aa shayar hai, gham aaj naghma hai
shab yeh gazhal hai sanam
Gairon ke shreon ko o sunne wale
Ho is taraf bhi karam"

Meghal why do u still watch VCD's...There is a very good quality DVD of Abhimaan available, though its a bit hard to find these days. Its manufactured by EVP...and its progressive. The other version by SKY/BABA are bad..so avoid them

Pratick..did you know that Kishore kumar actually forced himself onto SDB...
Till aaradhana, Rafi Saab was SDB's fav singer... Now luck had it that SDB fell ill while making "Roop Tera Mastana"..So in comes Pancham..in comes Kishore...and as you know..the rest is history .. In fact, that actually started the demise of the Md. Rafi - SDB combo !....

NO doubt Rafi saab gave some of the most memorable qawwali renditions in Hindi movies under RD's supervision.

Meghal. now only if you could understand Bangla... :p

I have the pleasure of enjoying those hit songs in two different languages.. RD had a knack of flipping both versions...idhar ka maal udhar udhar ka maal idhar...

Ye,s I have heard that story too.
It is true that RD brought Kishore into the mainstream.
Prior to that, he wa always under the sidelines of Rafi, Mukesh, Lata, etc.
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride :)
After RD and Kishore visited the US to pick-up on the pop/rock-and-roll culture in the late 60s, early 70s, that's when RD changed his style of music.
If you listen to RD's earlier songs, he composed more like SD (in fact, an inferior version of SD).
But after the change, he established an identity of his own and his own signature compositions.

That said, SD had been using Kishore every now and then right from the early 1950s, esp. in Dev Anand movies.
Think of Funtoosh, House No. 44, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (all 50s and 60s).

But during his later years, it is quite likely that SD was too ill to supervise all of his composition, and RD had a bigger and bigger role in composing those songs, and hence Kishore Kumar.

Kinda, sorta.
IMO, Rafi and SD did their best work in the 50s and early 60s, before the time of RD.
Rafi did his best work for composers like Naushad, Madan Mohan, Roshan, etc.
By the early 70s, Rafi's type of composers were either retired (Naushad) or passed away (Madan Mohan, etc.)
Although, his voice was still stellar and he could render anything with the same magic, there simply weren't composers and song writers good enough to take advantage of his talents.
The Anand Bakshi/Laxmikant Pyarelal type of song writers and composers were simply not able to create the same magic with Rafi, thus, Rafi ended up singing a lot of ordinary, sub-quality and forgettable songs during those years (up until his death in 1980).

Uh oh.
I beg to differ.
RD was not a great qawalli composer, at least not compared to the likes to Madan Mohan, Roshan and Naushad.
Those were the guys who really captured the soul of the qawali
Think of movies like Barsaat ki raat, Mirza Ghalib, etc.

Uh-oh....I said "some"....

Naushad's compositions were creame-de -la creame !... But
"Hai agar dushman dushman zamana hum nahin nahin
koi aaye koi hum kisi se kam nahin kam nahin"
and those were the days when "Mamma Mia " was ruling the roost !

Madan Mohan and qawwali ?....Maybe
"Haal kya hai dilon ka na poochon sanam
aapka muskurana gazab dha gaya"

Naushad was the qawwali maestro !..but barring a few exceptions...qawwalis = Md. Rafi....

I am beginning to wonder...
"Hindustan kya itni tung hai, ki Rafi saab ke baad yahan aur koi qawwal paida nahin hua hai" (read the words Hindustan...not anywhere else) :(

Meghal, Pratick, Vishal and others...for your enjoyment

Hamein tumse pyar kitna, yeh Hum nahin jaante
Magar jee nahin sakte, tumhare bina

and nope..it is not the Kishore Kumar version...

It is the "other" classical version ! The genius of RDB !
By Begum Parveen Sultana !

"Koi jo daale tumpe nayanwa
dekha na jaaye mosey sajanwa
Jale mora manwa
jale mora manwa"

I have few bengali songs which were "recreated" into Hindi. First and foremost, "Aaj Hridaye Bhalo" which is "Kora Kagaz Tha". Then I have "Rooposhi" which is "Aao Na Gale Lagao Na" from Mere Jeevan Saathi. However, these are more of using same tune but taking out bangla words and putting Hindi words or vice versa.

The other song I have is the bangla version of "Phoolon Ke rang se" sung by SDB himself. The good part is, the "phoolon ke rang se" is more "refined" version of the original song. It is real pleasure to hear both the songs in their own

Meghal
