Hi Abydad,

Considering jobs are usually regulated, it would be safest to obtain a certification in anything you do to enter that field in Canada. Be it a chef, driver, trash collector or public service officer, everyone has to be certified to able to perform a set of duties, that's how Canada works.

Given this, it would be always advisable to pursue the CGA designation but once a CGA you cannot audit for public limited companies, this can only be done by CAs who qualify from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

In the line of CGA is CMA which is mostly for people wanting to become Financial Managers etc.

Same as your age, at 29, even I want to pusue CGA once I'm in Canada. I have sent you a PM with my details, do get in touch.

Thanks

hi,
I started doing CGA from 2nd level and now I was in 4th level when we moved to USA. But it is really good to pursue CGA, even if you write on your resume that you are enrolled with CGA you'll get good jobs. what I have noticed is that once you enter in a company than it does not matter whether you are a CGA or not, if you have brains ... company would help you complete your CGA. I know Sears did it for one of our classmates. But to enter in a company you have to enroll.

Employment agencies like Accountemps, would not even register you if you do not have good canadian Accounting experience or enrolled in CGA (or similar course) Once you get register with them they get you good jobs too. It's a very reputed agency for Accounting people.

Later on if you want to move to USA (Better rates), you have to have a degree to work here. I regret that I did not complete it. I would say complete it ASAP.

I forgot to mention about the income part. Well, with agency do not expect more than $12- $15 per hour. (remember that I am talking about my experience only) it depends a lot what company you are working for and what kind of job you are doing. I was working as Accounts payable (but eventually, started taking more responsibilities). Later on after 6 months or so I got offered $18.
I know one more thing is that companies prefer women over men in accounting department. they might not say it because they cannot but they like to hire women because they normally do not change there jobs so frequently. Again thats from my personal experience.

If you are still in outside Canada, please complete US CPA before landing in Canada. That will open the doors to pursue Canadian CA much more easily. The rules are little weird. If you do CPA before landing is more beneficial than doing it after landing. I did my CPA after landing so to pursue Canadian CA. I have to write more exams. I donot know exact rules. But please make enquiries.

NO IT IS NOT WORTH:

if your are an engineer and have experience in that field and want to remain in that field.

or, if you are a doctor and wish to pursue a career in your field of study

or if you are a musician and do not want to do anything with accounting.

or if you are a businessman and just want to run your own business,

or, if you simply do not want to do accounting.

What do you say?? Isn't is a fitting answer to your question?
