What is the point in making this news so prominent by saying - only happens in India?
now wait for someone saying that this happens due to 'Indian culture' or lack of it. How come the actions of criminals are allowed to define what 'culture' is?

Although I agree that these atrocities don't just happen in India, I feel that it is important that we make news such as this prominent among the NRI Community. At the least, it will make the Boo Hoo Brigade recognize the relative safety from such crap that Canada offers to "All" its residents.

Since caste is involved (although nowhere the article says the men were of upper caste, it says they enjoyed political patronage, but from which party), it does represent some of Indian culture. In North Bihar the problem is quite acute. Incidents like these occur everyday, some where upper caste people are at the receiveing end. My uncle who is in police in North Bihar (North of Patnay
) says North Bihar is virtually free of communal problems, all the violence is mostly caste based.
If this happened is the west it would be the equivalent of a race based crime...hate crime (like Jasper, TX). That would then represent some of west's culture...i.e. racism, which may or maynot be present now in its worst forms.
This is more than a crime, if it were upper caste men who blinded him...

I think we have to differ on this.
I'll put it in other words...
Is blowing up people part of 'Islamic culture'?
Are burning of muslims 'hindu culture'?
Aerial bombings 'christian' or 'western' culture?
There are political/economic/social/historical 'reasons' behind these actions but not all 'upper caste' hindu men go about blinding dalits...nor do all white westerners(even if they are avowed racists) drag black men on the road tied to their cars.
Again, why do we let the base and extreme elements and actions and/or exceptions define what a culture is or is not?
