Recently, a black man was attacked in Calgary, Canada by a group of white men in what police believe is an racist attack. The black man was with couple of other guys who were white & they were not targetted.

A taxi driver apparrently Pakistani/Indian (by the name in the newspaper) followed the car in which the attackers escaped & noted down the car number.

Happens in all places, any country.

Rgds.

Rajan.

The event definetly reflects on India. Think of it, the people may not have thought of blinding the Guy (maybe verbally abusing him) had there not been tacit support of the the village machinery (panchayat), the state (police) and politicians (both part of state and society). So a lot of people are comlicit.
This happend in near the capital city of one of the most populous states in India.

Mercury..if you read and understand my Khalil Gibran tag line...you know how much I agree with this point you are making. Infact all of us are complicit in these actions with varying degrees of separation.
e.g: the pepsi plant in south india which is exploiting the ground water in tribal areas which is greatly affecting the tribals who depend on the same. Now who enable corporations like pepsi...the consumer!
OR closer to Canada
You think the Iraq war(and many other problems) would have happened if NA was not built and designed around the automobile? Now wether you are an F1 affinicado, have 10 gas guzzling SUV's or simply cruise around the city in our hybrid...our complicity is lessened(if at all) only by degrees of separation.

So ultimately, you are probably correct, in a sense 'Indian culture' is to blame for this event as it is for the war on Iraq(by degrees of separation). The way we live as part of self-interest bound societies or 'groups'(as you put it) ensures this. However, like I pointed out in the rest of the thread...the final responsibility and solution(in gods time)rests at an 'individual' level.

This may also answer my question asto WHY we choose to define ourselves by exceptions. Probably because we subconciously know about our complicity in these events.

Dear fellow canadiandesis,

Namaskar !

I just dont understand why this word "dalit" gets tagged whenever a "dalit" is involved. Does that make the crime more serious? or is it that "non dalits" have no place in Indian society, and it is ok to commit attrocities against them (though these may not be so common)?

Show me one example of a Non dalit getting blinded by a Dalit in India (and the police not doing anything) and I will support your view.

When the crime is motivated by the "so called Cast", the cast does become relevant because that is the only way we can define and understand the related crime.
