58 years of is a long time (or is it?) and we have come a long way from where we started off but there are so many things we still want freedom from.

1. Police harassment
2. Using religion for politics
3. Blindly supporting capitalism
4. Intolerance towards minority groups
5. Potholes
6. Prehistoric and discriminatory rape laws
7. Dowry - in all it’s forms
8. Extravagant weddings that put unnecessary pressure on parents
9. Undue pressure on schoolchildren
10. The horrific caste system
11. Giving out pseudo-religious symbols to propagate violence
12. Educational institutions and textbooks that perpetuate gender, religious or any other kind of stereotype,
13. The Babri Masjid-Ram Janm Bhoomi tussle
14. Terrorism in Kashmir
15.Repeated neglect of the North East
16. Labour-displacing technologies in agriculture, veterinary services, fisheries, construction and mining sectors
17.The practice of not implementing laws
18.Slum demolition without offering them a place to live
19.Niche malls like (wedding malls, senior citizen malls, furniture malls etc)
20.Terms like “eve-teasing” or “roadside romeos”. It’s sexual harassment and those who do it are harassers.
21.Politicians with police records
22. Lax attitude towards people displaced by large ‘development’ projects - we need an Enactment of a National Rehabilitation Policy for them.
23. Ignorance about marital rape
24. Obsession with America
25.The informal joint military alliance with the US (joint military exercises and the offer to permit Indian soil to be used for refuelling facilities for American military airplanes)
26. Continually building places of worship instead of using that money for other causes like providing food and shelter for the homeless
27. Media space provided to Page 3 types
28. Giving out passes - if you’re important enough to get a pass, you’re rich enough to buy the ticket.
29. Religion
30. Lack of medical facilities for rural poor
31. Yellow journalism
32. Mindless dribble that 24-hour news channels broadcast as fillers
33. Bureaucracy and Red-tapism
34. Unsolicited telemarketing
35. Advertisements that make smoking/drinking look cool
36. 4 am power cuts
37. Obsession with materialism
38. Pressure to get married
39. The patriarchal set-up of our society
40. Doctors who prescribe tests and check-ups just to make money
41. Illiteracy - and the apathy towards making primary education compulsory
42. Remix videos and the objectification of women
43. The casting couch
44. Using loudspeakers at rallies and protests
45. Autos that simply paint on ‘CNG’ without actually converting
46. Bollywood ‘formula’ films
47. Item girls
48. Media coverage of item girls
49. Apathy towards rules when giving out drivers' licences
50. Negligence towards adulterated and spurious goods
51. Dime-a-dozen astrologers, palmists, tarot card readers
52. Pseudo-intellectual jargon passed off as “serious” and “meaningful” reading
53. Obsessing over Aishwarya Rai’s clothes
54. Double standards about saas-bahu serials
55. Equating sexual liberation with promiscuity
57. Skin flicks
And finally...
58. Committees, commissions and all other such boards - all they do is sit on the matter

I want freedom from people asking the question....

Kitne saal hue apko canada mein?????

Every new desi I've met has to ask this question. Not that i get pissed but certainly do get bored answering the same question and besides my math is bad so i have to use my head to count

2. Using religion for politics.

That is more because the "junta" falls for it.

3. Blindly supporting capitalism

- Not true. In fact India's economy was a protected one for a long time.

4. Intolerance towards minority groups

- Not true. On the contrary, these days you stand to gain a lot more by belonging to minority groups.

6. Prehistoric and discriminatory rape laws

- Not true. What part of the rape laws do you find prehistoric and discriminatory? At the current time, the laws are heavily in favour of the rape victim.

7. Dowry - in all it’s forms

- Why “in all its forms”? What is wrong if I willingly wish to give money to my daughter?

8. Extravagant weddings that put unnecessary pressure on parents

- Again, wrong only if done under compulsion.

15.Repeated neglect of the North East

- Not clear. How and in what way has the NE been neglected?

16. Labour-displacing technologies in agriculture, veterinary services, fisheries, construction and mining sectors

- Not true. If technology improves, efficiency or quality, it should be adopted.

19.Niche malls like (wedding malls, senior citizen malls, furniture malls etc)

- Why? What’s wrong with having malls?

20.Terms like “eve-teasing” or “roadside romeos”. It’s sexual harassment and those who do it are harassers.

- I don’t see the relationship between the two. Yes they sexually harass and are called eve teasers. It is just another term that describes the nature of harassment.

24. Obsession with America

- What’s special with India on this? Anyone from any third world country will be “obsessed” with a first world country like America.

25.The informal joint military alliance with the US (joint military exercises and the offer to permit Indian soil to be used for refuelling facilities for American military airplanes)

- What is wrong in this?

26. Continually building places of worship instead of using that money for other causes like providing food and shelter for the homeless

- Who is building places of worship? Not the government! And if it is done by patrons using private funds, it is their business how they spend their money.

27. Media space provided to Page 3 types

- Please explain.

28. Giving out passes - if you’re important enough to get a pass, you’re rich enough to buy the ticket.

- This is done all over the world. It is not that people who get the passes do not have money to buy tickets. The passes are usually given for a favor, either already performed in the past or expected in the future.

29. Religion

- Why should there be no religion at all? There is nothing wrong with religion until it is misused.

31. Yellow journalism

- Exists in some measure everywhere. Nothing to single India out on this.

32. “Mindless dribble” that 24-hour news channels broadcast as fillers

- Turn off the TV if you find it “Mindless dribble”! Who is forcing you to watch?

34. Unsolicited telemarketing

- In India?? I think that is a much bigger problem here. And in any case, remember it provides jobs to people.

35. Advertisements that make smoking/drinking look cool

- Haven’t seen any in a long long time. Have you?

37. Obsession with materialism

- That is for individuals to decide.

38. Pressure to get married

- Again it is something at the individual level. Over 20, a person who cannot resist pressure needs to evaluate himself.

39. The patriarchal set-up of our society

- Why? Do you prefer matriarchal?

43. The casting couch

- Applies universally.

47. Item girls

- What are they?
51. Dime-a-dozen astrologers, palmists, tarot card readers

- Available everywhere.
53. Obsessing over Aishwarya Rai’s clothes

- How does it affect anyone if I drool over Aishwarya or her clothes(or lack of them preferably)?

First of all I did not compile this list of 58 things. I thought it to be interesting so I posted. But seems like now i have to defend it

Quote:

2. Using religion for politics.
That is more because the "junta" falls for it.

Agree

Quote:

3. Blindly supporting capitalism
- Not true. In fact India's economy was a protected one for a long time.

There is difference between "WAS and "IS".

Quote:

4. Intolerance towards minority groups
- Not true. On the contrary, these days you stand to gain a lot more by belonging to minority groups.

Know what the jehanabad killings were done for !!!
http://www.geocities.com/indiafas/Dalit/attrocities.htm
1984- Over 2000 Sikhs were killed and many more displaced and to this date not a single one has been prosecuted.
1992- Babri masjid riots around 2000 killed and a lot more displaced
2002-Godhra riots over or around 1000 killed andthousands displaced
Smaller riots occurred in Gujarat in 1986, 1993, 1999, and 2001. Twice in 1999, attacks were targeted in the state against Christians and their property. and the list can keep growing if I spend more time to write about it.
Dude, just because you do not know does not mean it does not happen.

Quote:

6. Prehistoric and discriminatory rape laws
- Not true. What part of the rape laws do you find prehistoric and discriminatory? At the current time, the laws are heavily in favour of the rape victim.

Recently for a rape of a girl in delhi a guy was given bail the same day cuz he was the sole earner of the family!!! Sounds prehistoric and discrimanatory to me....and there are tons more example like this. I have never seen or heard a highly rich and powerful guy going to jail for a rape regardless. If thats not discrimanation then what is .....but poor guy who would have raped will certainly go to jail. Not that i want him to go free or anything but he isnt influential enough to get his way out.

Quote:

7. Dowry - in all it’s forms
- Why “in all its forms”? What is wrong if I willingly wish to give money to my daughter?

Then go ahead and give the money who is stopping you.........I thought ashirwaad was good enough :D

Quote:

8. Extravagant weddings that put unnecessary pressure on parents
- Again, wrong only if done under compulsion.

Are you actually from India or what????
The way the Indian society works is magical to you I suppose :madgo:
"Unki beti ki shaadi mein to unhone ek gaadi, fridge, gas, diamond sets and all sorts of chize gift kari......aap apni beti ki shaadi mein kya de rahe hain?" Have you ever heard this?

Quote:

15.Repeated neglect of the North East
- Not clear. How and in what way has the NE been neglected?

Reading this might educate you a little

Quote:

16. Labour-displacing technologies in agriculture, veterinary services, fisheries, construction and mining sectors
- Not true. If technology improves, efficiency or quality, it should be adopted.

I would agree with you here again.

Quote:

19.Niche malls like (wedding malls, senior citizen malls, furniture malls etc)
- Why? What’s wrong with having malls?

I think its retarded and also cheesy

Quote:

20.Terms like “eve-teasing” or “roadside romeos”. It’s sexual harassment and those who do it are harassers.
- I don’t see the relationship between the two. Yes they sexually harass and are called eve teasers. It is just another term that describes the nature of harassment.

So you are saying "Roadside Romeos" do not indulge in the art of eve-teasing :h

Quote:

24. Obsession with America
- What’s special with India on this? Anyone from any third world country will be “obsessed” with a first world country like America.

I am from India "a third world country" and i care a damn about the states. and not all indians are obsessive about "AMERRIKA".

Quote:

25.The informal joint military alliance with the US (joint military exercises and the offer to permit Indian soil to be used for refuelling facilities for American military airplanes)
- What is wrong in this?

Why should we ....... One good reason is required:smash:

Quote:

26. Continually building places of worship instead of using that money for other causes like providing food and shelter for the homeless
- Who is building places of worship? Not the government! And if it is done by patrons using private funds, it is their business how they spend their money.

True it is their business how they spend their money.........after all feeding a hungry person or buying medicines for poor is far way down on the list or may be not even on the list.

Quote:

27. Media space provided to Page 3 types
- Please explain.

A poor guy needing a kidney transplant or aheart transplant does not get 3" x 3" space in the newspaper but ash has got cold makes the headlines

Quote:

28. Giving out passes - if you’re important enough to get a pass, you’re rich enough to buy the ticket.
- This is done all over the world. It is not that people who get the passes do not have money to buy tickets. The passes are usually given for a favor, either already performed in the past or expected in the future.

Pass...next:huh:

Quote:

29. Religion
- Why should there be no religion at all? There is nothing wrong with religion until it is misused.

:o

Quote:

31. Yellow journalism
- Exists in some measure everywhere. Nothing to single India out on this.

I am talking about India only. I dont care about zimbabwe or sudan or amerrika

Quote:

32. “Mindless dribble” that 24-hour news channels broadcast as fillers
- Turn off the TV if you find it “Mindless dribble”! Who is forcing you to watch?

Dont you find them trying to make anything and everythin regardless how trivial it is "SENSATIONAL".

Quote:

34. Unsolicited telemarketing
- In India?? I think that is a much bigger problem here. And in any case, remember it provides jobs to people.

Yes my friends in India too. Not to that extent but it does atleast in the metros.....i dont know about jabalpur:rolleyes:
Quote:

35. Advertisements that make smoking/drinking look cool
- Haven’t seen any in a long long time. Have you?

I still see posters of akshay smoking red and white on the billboards and on lots of walls. And also i have seen sunnydeol for the mcdowell ads.

Quote:

37. Obsession with materialism
- That is for individuals to decide.

The point is people werent materialistic we would probably have lesser problems

Quote:

38. Pressure to get married
- Again it is something at the individual level. Over 20, a person who cannot resist pressure needs to evaluate himself.

WE all have been there at one point or another..........:b

Quote:

39. The patriarchal set-up of our society
- Why? Do you prefer matriarchal?

Do you find that attitude sexist at all?

Quote:

43. The casting couch
- Applies universally.

A lot of things are universal that does not mean they are ok!

Quote:

47. Item girls
- What are they?

Koi samjao ise bhai????:cuss:

Quote:

51. Dime-a-dozen astrologers, palmists, tarot card readers
- Available everywhere.

Not as many as in India and not a lot of takers here anyways

Quote:

53. Obsessing over Aishwarya Rai’s clothes
- How does it affect anyone if I drool over Aishwarya or her clothes(or lack of them preferably)?

I dont care whether you drool or not.......Dude try to read newspapers and stay current....or pay me and i'll keep u posted :L ..
they made a big hungama when she was in cannes last year and her clothes were'nt designed great....... then wehn she was on the U.S tour being interviewed by oprah, david letterman and that sixty minutes show.people kept criticizing her clothes and it was all over the papers.
