Buying cell phone outside Canada

Are there any issues I should watch out for if I buy an unlocked GSM triband phone outside Canada?

The choices in Canada seem pretty limited compared to the selection in Asia so I was thinking of getting a phone from outside.

I'm wondering if it will work on all networks like Rogers, Virgin etc?

Do any networks have restrictions on buying your own phone and sticking a SIM into it?

Any thoughts?

Nope

Yuu should be good, Just make sure the phone is compatible with the Provider and you can only buy only the SIM card

Thanks...it seems like most providers don't rquire you to buy their cellphone to get a plan.

And some providers don't seem to give much of a discount when buygin a phone with them...unless it's some antique that everyone else dumped way back.

Are there any Desi stores here in toronto selling GSM phones since the Canadian stores do not have lot of GSM phone options?

Also any stores here who would unlock the GSM phone for us to be able to use it anywhere?

most of the phones have customizable ringtones option.
Is there any cell phone provider who would allow download of Bollywood ringtones and if yes, which phones and provider would do that? Any cost attached?

Going to Best Buy and these places, they suggest buying GSM phone from India and using it here, since those phones have a lot of options and are cheaper.

Looking forward to ur response

does anyone know of model numbers of cell phones, that can be bought in India and used here on Telus or Rogers or Bell? In that case is it that we need to change the card to be able to use the phone here?

what about phones from here and use in india?

Only Rogers & Fido in Canada are GSM. You can get the fone from India as long as it's a tri-band or a quad-band fone it'll work. All you need to do is buy a SIM card locally. New SIM cards are usually available for around $10 (Rogers sells it for $25).

SS,
can you tell me where i can get SIM cards for $10?

Alexm,

You should have gone with Fido. They offer the most competitive prices (In Ontario and may be true in Montreal too)

Actually, I did.

I said Rogers because I thought they'd been bought over.

My phone says Rogers when turned on.

Thanks for the tip though...
