From bestbuy

HP with AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-34 Processor (1.8GHz)
100 GB Hard Drive
1024MB system memory
Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
17" LCD Screen

It costed me $999.99 + 1 LinkSys WRT54G $69.99
$ 324.99 was three years warranty purchase.

Any comments..

Most computers come with a 1 yr standard warranty.....effectively you paid $324.99 for a 2 yr warranty....after 1 yr your computer will be worth $600 and change.....the future value of $324.99 in 2 yrs at 10% is $400 and change so roughly you paid $400 to insure a $600 computer.....You see stores dont make any money on selling items they make money on the warranty but hey if it makes you sleep better at night thats great!!! Good luck with your purchase. Hope you never have to use the warranty although a part of me hopes that you do just to teach the money grabbing stores a lesson.......

Sometimes these warranties can come in handy as you never know when an electronic item would give you trouble. The Best Buy's extended warranties are generally very good and you can certainly have peace of mind for 3 years.

Jut to add here for the benefits of those who may not be aware of that if you buy any electronic item for your personal use and you use your VISA GOLD card, then automatically the warranties are doubled up by VISA to a maximum of 1 year additional peariod with out any cost. Hence, if you paid by your VISA GOLD then the warranty for the 2nd year would be covered by VISA.

GG

Thanks for the info on the extended warranty covering more than standard warranty.

Pramodji, I did not know about the VISA gold thing. I guess a VISA gold from any issuer would do that right?

For the benefit of CDs I am providing a link on extended warranties...

http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/money/extended_warranties/index2.html

The bottomline is as follows:

Our expert, Tod Marks, advises people thinking about an extended warranty to save the money and put it into a repair fund — just in case.

"An extended warranty is good for the retailer. It’s not good for the consumer."

http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/money/extended_warranties/

BTW by no means am I criticizing anyones decision to purchase extended warranties. It is a personal choice and should remain so.

You are right about not criticizing any one's decision as this is really a personal choice. I may have not taken this warranty my self as I would have used my VISA GOLD to buy the same.

These extended warranties are good for the retailer as thats where they make money and that's why they trained their sales force to let the clients know the benefit in such a way that it would entice them to buy the same. For a client its like buying a term life insurance which he may never use but it gives peace of mind.

Its actually a good idea to buy extended warranty on laptops considering the LCD has a high probablity of dying on you. The manufacturer I dont believe covers it. Thats where the extended warranty would come in handy.

I would add though that your laptop is going to stop working or have problems just the week or month after the warranty expires. :D

Has happened to me with hard drives on two occasions.
