My study permit and temporary resident visa expire on 31 August 2006. I have been issued a year-long work permit recently, however was really surprised to find out from CIC that should I visit India after 31st Aug 2006, I will have to apply for the entry visa (temporary resident visa) again to return to work in Canada. The fact that my work permit would still be valid at the time, would have no bearing on my temporary resident visa/status.

A bit of search into this online tells me that I can actually apply for a TRV to Canada before I leave for India, by submitting my application to an out-of-Canada consulate (likely in US - Buffalo or Detroit?)

My query is - has anybody else gone through this experience? Where did you apply? How much time did it take for you to get your passport back, with the new TRV? Any advice on this?

Somehow, I am not comfortable about posting my passport out of Canada. But since my planned visit to India in Nov '06 is just a week long (hence not enough time to go through the whole process there) I have no other option than applying beforehand. I'd really appreciate if somebody else can share their experience on this. Many thanks for your time.

There are no surprises here. Your work permit or any other permit dictates your legal stay. However, you need a valid visa to re-enter the country. That is a perfectly normal and long followed procedure. Your permit is the basis by which your visa would be issued.

You are correct on this one. Fortunately for you, Canada does allow mail in applications and hence you do not have to go through the burden of obtaining a US visa to enter US to attend a Cdn consulate face to face stint.

It is perfectly safe to send your passport to a Cdn consulate located in the US via a courier or a robust trackable mailing such as registered mail with delivery tracking. I would go with a courier such as UPS, Fedex, DHL or Purolator, etc. I would mail courier and attach a return courier envelope as well so you can track its transit.

Thanks dimple2001 for a prompt response. Having been in UK earlier on a work permit for three years and never having had to apply for an entry visa again when returning to UK from India during this time, was the reason I was surprised to find an additional formality in case of returning to Canada (while on a valid work permit). Understandable though that different countries have different sets of rules.

Anyway, I'd still appreciate if anybody else can share their experience on this. Were you called for an interview by the Canadian consulate in US? Time processing etc?
