How come such a large difference? the USD to CAD conversion rate is not that high.

Any thoughts??

The fee is not based on currency conversion of USD to CAD or INR to CAD. It is the fees that Indian High Commission/consulate will accept in local currency.

What it is based on, I do not know. OCI/PIO fee is more than what is for Canadian citizenship and they will not even reply to your emails and faxes.

The Ministry of Home affairs web site states - "US $ 275 or equivalent in
local currency". From what I heard (don't remember the source), it's upto the Consulate within each country to decide upon the fees.

The dollar conversion is an arbitrary rate picked out of the hat by the IHC in Ottawa.

They will not give you an explanation why they are charging CAD421, which is CAD 100 more than what the official exchange rate is. The funny thing is that the HC fixed this rate when the CAD dollar was doing very well against the USD (around 85 cents), so its not as if they fixed this rate when the CAD$ was 65 cents, like it was 4-5 years back.

Thanks. The Toronto consulate web site says

"N.B. Minor children are NOT eligible for OCI in case both parents are Indian nationals"

In my case, my son is born here (10 months old) and I am going to get my citizenship. My wife wants to stay with indian passport and we want atleast one parent of the child to be indian citizen.

In this case, based upon the above statement Is my son eligible for OCI? (I am thinking of sending our OCI applications together).

Regards,

Yes. For children, you can get PIO first and then apply for OCI if you want to save some money in application fee. Fee details would be on consultate website.

Children have to put their thumb impression on the application and it may not be mentioned anywhere in the form or on website.

Indian consultate will keep all your original documents that you attach until the time they process your application. Sending application and receiving the card though Toronto office is done though postal mail only.

Best way to contact consulate at Toronto is though phone only.
