(From Dinamalar of 25-10-06).
The above schools meant for the “really” socially and economically backward children of our country was started in 1986 by our late PM Rajiv Gandhi on the lines of residential public schools. His intention was really noble in that he wanted the poor children also to have the benefit of Doon School type education without spending a single pie. All books, note books, boarding, lodging and clothes are provided by the school funded by the central government. The Centre allocates more than a crore each year on every school, apart from spending 3 crores to start each school.
There are 551 such schools all over India, but not a single one in TN. THE REASON BEING, THE SCHOOLS HAVE MADE LEARNING HINDI COMPULSORY FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN CLASS VI AND IX, AND IT IS TANTAMOUNT TO FORCING HINDI ON THE PEOPLE OF TN. Therefore successive Dravidian parties in power have prevented from such schools to be started in TN. During the past 20 years, 100s of poor children from TN have lost the opportunity to have excellent education free of cost. And their parents are voting these very Dravidian parties to power in happy unconsciousness.

It is unfortunate that it is the common man who suffers because of these language politics.
