Hi,

Does anyone have good reviews of any GPS systems?
Which company and models are good?

What should one look for in terms of specifications/features provided?

TIgerdirect has a Michelin GPS available for $265. Seems to have lot of good features but not sure if it is worth a buy.

Any opinions /feedback?

Try cnet.com for reviews. From reviews I've found the Garmin 360 a good model. Alternatively, you could also buy a Dell Axim x51v PDA & get a BT GPS. The entire package should cost around $450 to $500. That way you get a PDA too.

I just got a Garmin Nuvi as a gift and it is great. It has the Bluetooth built-in so I use it with my cell phone while driving in the car. When I leave my car I just simply remove it from the base (very easy to do compared to some other models) and I just stick it in the glove compartment or take it with me.

Have had no problems with the unit. I've been using it for about 3-4 months now.

I would stay away from the PDA option. PDAs are not really built to work as a GPS unit. It would be the same as trying to use your desktop as an enterprise server. It will work, but it won't give you the performance. I had tried using an Axim 50V with a delorme bluetooth GPS. It was a pain in the neck(just sold both of them on ebay). I switched to a standalone navman unit and have been happy with it. I have also used a Magellan RoadMate 3000T and that was also a beauty. I have used these both in USA and Canada and they worked without problems. This was my criteria for selection :

1. Must have preloaded maps of USA and Canada on hard drive or fixed flash memory. Somehow I couldn't find the concept of all maps on a removable SD card reliable, but that is just my prejudice. I have no idea how good or bad they are.
2. Should be less than 400 USD.
3. Should have a good touch screen interface and controls.
4. Screen should be easily readable under different lighting conditions.
5. Voice prompts should be clear, accurate and timely.

You can use this criteria if you like them, or better come up with your own. Read a lot of reviews and then decide.

Personally, I think options for digital photos and music on a GPS should not be a criteria at all. However, to have the GPS work as a bluetooth handsfree for your phone sounds good. Too bad my GPS does not have that. I was tempted to go for the costlier systems, but after using the 200 dollar Navman I do not really see the benefit in buying a 600+ dollar system. Just my 2cents... Happy GPS buying :-)
