On Northwest...
25000 miles for Silver Elite
50000 miles for Gold elite
75000 miles for Platinum Elite
Also, you can get elite status by flying x number of segments (flights) if your flying habits are all short distances.
Elite miles (miles counted towards elite status) are earned only by flying NW. All other miles earned by flying partner airlines count towards ...well...just miles. Caveat....as you become elite, a percentage of miles earned through partner airlines count towards elite miles.
Skyteam partners are NW, Continental, Delta, Czech Airways, AeroMexico, etc, etc. Jet airways is part of Skyteam, although not one of the core members (whatever that means)
A slight addendum to the above:
The above have to be accumulated in one calender year to get the status.
Another good thing about NW is:
1. Points never expire - like many other airlines
2. Once you reach elite silver status, you get 1.5 times the normal miles and on gold you get double the regular miles.
