Since someone has refreshed this thread I would like to share my recent experience .While walking from the bus stop to my Apartment (8 mins ) in -25 and a wind blowing against me , my feet started losing sensation / becoming numb .... as I was wearing a trouser .... after a few minutes inside things returned back to normal .

Since I have not experienced such an extremity I was wonderign whether it is recommended to use long Johns / pyjamas below the trousers or is it just once in a while .

Fido,
Always recommended long jones. This will also help prevent arthritis specially knees.

Precaution is better than cure.

Just to add my two cents:

Cotton or Flannel/Cotton will keep you warmer than polyester or Denim.

Please be careful with frostbite.

Yeah ,

The very next day i checked for 'frostnip' & 'frostbite'.

In dicey weather I would consider wearing somethign underneath the trousers from now on ...

Few winter tips:

Winter Jackets:

I think couple of jackets are really good idea here.

One for really-2 cold weather and waterproof.
They are little heavy, breathable but good in winter and skiing. They also comes three in one jacket (like Columbia Titanium, Helly Hanson). Make sure having hooded also.

You can have one down jacket which is really good for winter, office, sitting in car. These are very light, comfortable and good for cold (but not good for skiing or rain).

One jacket you need casually very light weight good for mild winter.

Try not to buy jacket which don’t have any detail specifications about cold, breathable, waterproof. There are lot of crap in market which are not good jacket in dead cold but salesman try to push you with brand names. All big brand names make jacket from all type of cold so be smart what is the purpose/activities for buying jacket.

Winter shoes:

Same couple of pairs is good idea.

1. One boots (high) pair for -20, -30'C is good having thinsulate and waterproof. Must read on shoe specifications ( don’t go with salesman). Never buy cheap brands they are not good in this dead cold even they say thinsulate and waterproof. Make sure they talk about upto what temp. they are good to go. (Columbia, North Face)

2. One pair for regular winter temp. They don’t talk about up to what temp they are good but must be waterproof and little cushion is good idea. I prefer to have polish one so can wear at office, jeans and light walks. (Rockport, Hush Puppies)

3. One low raise cross country shoe, they are like winter sport shoes. You can run, play, and hike them easily. They are waterproof too and even can play tennis with them. They keep foot warm in winter and free to do all activities. (Timberland, NorthFace)

Winter pants:

1. You can buy cotton/fleece lining jeans and trousers these days. They are really good stuff. Sometime you don’t need to wear any lining inside. (llbeans, Eddie Bower)

2. Always wear little heavy cotton pants. But there are few companies who makes 50% cotton and 50% woolen trousers. They are comfortable like cotton with woolen warmness (brooke brothers, Eddie Bower, lot of premium stores)

3 There are two types of underlines for pants: cotton and sports fleece/polyester.
Cotton is good for office and regular walk but never wear for any sports acitivity and skiing.
Remember: Cotton is killer for skiing and any winter sports activity. Make sure wear fleece, polyester, light woolen and breathable clothes.
Underline pants ( gap, menwearhouse make cotton lining; helly Hanson, north face makes very good sports underpants)

Socks:
1. Keep woolen thick socks for winter and sports. For daily wear you can get having more cotton and less woolen but for sports must wear light on cotton side.
2. There are cashmere socks now days they are my favorite in winter. Soft, easy and good for both home and sports.

I hope this will help.

I am not sure how few people are surviving and keeps active life in winter when I saw them wearing inappropriate winter clothes especially Indian ladies having Indian lady suit with white summer sports shoes.

Fido,
As I had mentioned to you, Halifax is a lot windier than Toronto. It is almost always windy. It normally does not get colder than Toronto(though I believe this year it did), however it does stay colder longer(all the way till June), but it also has warmer temps than Toronto for most of the winter..
But again, it is almost always windy which makes the cold worse.
You should always consider wearing 'long johns' etc.
Need it much more there than here.
