Now coming back to the article .... it seems that the media has been "choked"by reports of these americans. To quote from the article "

"Indian schoolchildren light diyas (lamps) or fast, villages and towns in remote corners of India distribute sweets, dance in joy, and the cameras chase the drivers, aunties, uncles and village postmen for sound bytes—all because the son or a daughter of a former resident who quit the country fifty years ago has achieved a modicum of success thousands of kilometers away. "

Excepting for the welcome Sunita Williams got , no one "celebrated"Bobby Jindal or Norah Jones ...... If some people in Malerkotla distribute sweets .... does it mean that all of India is suffering from inferiority complex!!!!
It is just a piece put together by some one who feels we Indians have a complex, then he has built a case by giving examples which dont seem too convincing.
Take the example given by Suheal Seth ..... Bose .... when did the indians celebrate about bose .... when was the last time you heard Indians distributing sweets for him .
Now again he complains we dont treat our heroes ... Bismillah Khan & MS Subalaxmi ..... giving example of Pavarotti. You are comparing apples with oranges. Compare him with Amitabh or Shahrukh. Pavarotti will have a complex at the amount of media attention our heroes get. When Amit had his acident he was on news all that time, any celebrity would kill for the kind of attention we give to our celebrities here in India.
We are "over the top people"..... so we have teh same way of expressing our effection for people who we identify as one of us. Now Sunita got the reception'.... we have never welcomed Naipaul the same way ..... Infact the media asks him all the time , fully knowing his position about being called an india, in order to get some "sound bytes".
So take this article with a pinch of salt & feel happy.

I agree with you. Its not necessarily a bad thing that people look to find connections..common threads..ways to relate to others. Building on connections and looking at ways things are related is a part of the human condition.

Coming back to discussion .... this is not something which only Indians do ...... you will find communities in US from different ethinic backgrounds being proud of their heritage. Look at Italian Americans .... even if they are born in American they call them selves Italian American. Nancy Pelosi's great grand father came from Italy .... she is proud of her "Italian "Heritage .... no one asks if her grnadmother or mother was italian .... was she pure italian blood.

Another example is Robert De Niro .... Italian American .... was confered "honorary Italian citizenship " by Italian government .
Now he was not born in Italy or for that matter even his father. His grand father came from Italy & his grandmother was Irish. His father married an "american". So i guess he would be 1/4 (or 1/8 ... you do the math) Italian.

Does that mean the Italians have a complex?

Far-out! When I interviewed the dude way back when, after he was thru with his basketball practice, he said exactly that.

He was an American passport holder then but he said "I am pukka Indian"- no sh%t, I mean it. He actually said that. And after that he broke into the most beautiful Hindi that few can talk. I don't know everybody on CD but I am betting that the majority would be hard -pressed to beat his Hindi and it was excellent bloody non-accented Hindi.
I know I can't speak Hindi like he did and probably still does.
