Sad indeed.
I can never understand why promoting/encouraging one language has to come at the expense of another.
I do recall my school in the good ole' days tried to enforce speaking english only. Never succeeded when english was/is only a medium of instruction and not the first language.
On the other extreme, Bharathiar University in Tamil Nadu recently enacted the policy where Tamil would be the official univ language and required all faculty and staff to sign any documents in Tamil (another absurdity).
Didn't Canada's highest court strike down Quebec's attempts to limit access to english language very recently?

I remember friend of mine tellin me few yrs back that his 6 yrs old daughter is confused after coming to Canada - In India everybody were asking her to communicate in English n after coming here they were stressing more on Hindi 
Regional or Hindi as a National Language is not promoted at all. It is Sad when you see this stuff happenin on Face n specially to kids ... but when in Public everybody prefers to talk English back home. Be it Politician, Actor, Sports personality - most of public faces speaks English (now its another story if it correct english or not) ...

It is sad but is not something new. I have heard about fines, etc., but this method of punishment is quite humiliating for the student. There is actually another side to the story, that is parents want their kids to speak good English and they are actually paying good money to these convent schools just for that reason. That is why no parent is complaining.

What makes me really sad is seeing two individuals from same country and do not have any common language other than english.
