patrickm,

Check out this link and the attached comments when you find time.

http://www.canadiancapitalist.com/what-is-my-portfolio-return/

The link discusses the various approaches to calculate returns. There seems to be different trains of thought on what can be considered the true reflection of the returns.

Cool, that's not bad at all esp. if it's for a period of 5 years or more.
A lot of self stock pickers do much worse.

The above returns are on investments that were started in mid 1998. The more recent ones (in the past 2 years) show a very high return which, in my mind, will probably decline as the years go by to a more stable 4% to 8 %.

Yep, there are many different ways, each meaningful for a different purpose (and some not meaningful at all).
I have usually used the second formula in that three-part series that one of the posters mentioned for calculating the IRR.
What gummy-stuff is calling XIRR is also called personalized rate of return by the mutual funds and pensions that measure your specific annualized return.
The way to calculate XIRR is to either use products like Microsoft Money, Quicken or if you build a spreadsheet yourself you'll need to use the Excel Solver function to "solve for" the IRR.
The formula I gave further up in the thread is the same as the one this poster uses in the second example.

Thanks for reviewing it. I couldn't make much sense out of the 3rd formula, but first and second seems quite relevant depending on whether there is multiple contribution (mutual fund) or single contribution (such as stock buy).

Yes Dimple, I am with Questrade for 11/2 years now and so far so good, never had any problems.

Just digging up an old thread for a new question. I see Questrade has recently started allowing funding the account in USD and trading in USD, thereby, bypassing the exchange fee. I just spoke with Questrade and confirmed that I can fund my non-regd individual account in USD via a certified cheque and trade in USD.

Questrade account holders - any feedback, experiences, shortcomings, cautions, warnings, etc?

Thanks.
