Brilliant Debate.

My respect for M.J.Akbar and also Mr.Sachin Pilot has gone up tremendously.

Mr.M.J.Akbar nails every muslim rhetoric on how they are not getting opportunities and also not gettting an even platform on its head.

Both Ms.Settlevad and Ms.Mustafa are more emotional than with substance.

This is the same Ms.Settlevad who is fighting for the Godhra and other Gujarat riot cases.

Mr.Pilot of Congress I nails the issue saying that the Indian muslims have the best deal in comparison to all the neighbouring countries.

Mr.M.J.Akbar points out that it was the muslims who voted in a majority to split from India and now complaining about issues.

He also points out that is a Muslim VP, Muslim Attorney General and also many others who run India and hence blame cannot be put on the Hindus for their faults.

A lady from the audience points out it is easy for a muslim to become the superstar of Indian cinema, captian of Indian team or being a brand ambassador or a sportsman but are not able to get a PSU job.

A muslim student from Middle East points out that the problems faced by the muslims is also faced by other poor of India. What a revelation !.

Total BS and rubbished by the crowd.


In the end the motion of \"Muslims are not getting a fair deal in India\" defeated by a yes vote of 33% to NO vote of 67%.

India Works!.

We need a Non - Secular media from outside to give us a correct picture of India. If you believe that TOINS and company will do it, dream on.

I saw it on the BBC. I dont know what the moderator was upto. First of all, why that debate? Time kill or what? Less said the better abt Teesta Setalwad.

Forget all the Doha debate etc. If we open the border with Pak and say that all good Muslims (including Mohajirs who left India) who want to immigrate to India can line up, then see how many will run for the border. Millions may be.

And the Doha debate is abt treatment of Muslims in India!

It was the wrong venue, the wrong topic and most of all the wrong participants and moderators. With due respect to the neutrality of the BBC, they had no business to conduct this debate because they are not a party to either a support, or discontent with the topic.

I used to have respect for seema mustafa, as a journalist, but her attitude as much as that of Teesta was nothing short of prejudice and hate. Teesta kept shaking her head with rage, disagreeing with everything that MJ Akbar had to say (that I consider utterly childish, and unprofessional). Teesta was clearly playing to the gallery, and of course her audience. While M.J. Akbar went to great lengths to explain how the Muslim was much better off in India, than in Pakistan or any other part of Asia. On the other hand both Seema and Teesta tried to the best to prove that the Muslims in India were poor, discriminated against, and third class citizens.

Teesta went about accusing the Government in Gujarat of instigating the riots, where many Muslims died. She tried to use that incident to prove how insecure the life of an average Muslim was, in India. Clearly it was a tirade against the state government, the society at large and what she called the `system``which she said, had been infiltrated by the right wing extremists (she obviously was referring to groups like RSS, and VHP).

Clearly it was not a reasonable, fair and balanced debate, even though both MJ Akbar and Sachin Pilot tried to bring about sense in it. Then the fact that it was held in Doha made the atmosphere surcharged with prejudice. The audience was predominantly made of Muslims, who believed that the Muslims in India were disadvantaged, and discriminated against. Their questions were based on their this prejudice and were directed at both Seema and Teesta, who kept reinforcing their hatred, prejudice and hatred directed at the majority community in India.

In short, the debate served no useful purpose, except reinforcing the stereotype that Muslims in India are 3rd class citizens, live in abject poverty, and have no useful role in society.

Japan offered to hide Bamiyan statues, but Taliban asked Japan to convert to Islam instead

Japan offered to hide Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddha statues to prevent the Taliban from destroying them, but the hardline regime instead suggested the Japanese convert to Islam, a new memoir says.

Abdul Salam Zaeef, who was Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s most public face as ambassador to Pakistan, wrote that Japan was the most active country in pressing the regime not to demolish the 1,500-year-old statues in 2001.

He said that an official delegation from Japan, along with a Buddhist group from Sri Lanka, offered to remove the statues piece by piece and reassemble them abroad.

“Another suggestion they had was that they cover the statues from head to toe in a way that no one would recognize they had ever been there, while preserving them underneath,” Zaeef wrote in “My Life With The Taliban,” just published in the United States.

He said that the Japanese told the Afghans that they were forefathers of their religion and should preserve its heritage, but Zaeef said Afghans considered Buddhism “a void religion.”

“Since they saw us as their forefathers and had followed us before, why had they not followed our example when we found the true religion, I asked them,” he wrote.

Defying the intense international appeals, the Taliban spent a month using first anti-aircraft guns and then dynamite to obliterate the Buddha statues, arguing that Islam forbade idolatry.

Zaeef said he believed that the destruction was within Islamic sharia law. But he wrote that the decision had “bad timing,” as it worsened the Taliban’s foreign relations.
