Friends,

I'm planning to move from California, USA to Toronto next month.

1. I want to know the average price that movers will charge for the whole move including customs, tax etc. for 1BHK home (1 queen bed, 1 dining table, 1 sofa, 2 chairs, TV stand, Flat screen TV & other dresses & utensils)

2. Any recommendation on movers will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

The minimum cost to pack and ship is dollar a pound from the USA.

You can get all that stuff here, (Identical or pretty close and some of them are better) for the same price. So, get rid off all of the stuff even if you get pea nuts for it. Bring in only items that are sentimental, heirlooms and valuable ones and on person.

You will save your self a lot of headaches. The loss of time associated with it is not worth it.

A few items can be shipped in its original packing and insured, in a small container and for a very nominal fee. Rates are better too. Ask them to deliver a container at your door step and you pack them and they will pick and deliver to you here. There are a lot of mini ones that are available in the market. You lock the container and provide the movers with a list of items in it.

When you cross the border, declare the goods to follow. Make two or more copies for the CBSA. They will stamp and give you the sheet for clearance at the Custom house. You produce it and take home. There will not be any charges for the goods that you bring in.

Get quotes from three movers and choose the one that suits your needs.

Freddie.

i moved from New Jersey to Toronto last year. I spent around 2500$. But mine was a 2bed , 2 level condo and i had some stuff. you should be looking at around atleast 2000$, since you are in California.

I believe i had used United Van Lines. Pretty Professional.

Freddie, I am getting conflicting information on importing beds (including mattreses & boxes ). Are you saying Beds (Mattresses ) are not allowed at all or are there exceptions in bringing them?

I have found some more information " regulation about fumigation is applicable to used and second hand mattresses, other than mattresses imported under tariff item Nos. 9806.00.00, 9807.00.00, 9808.00.00, 9809.00.00 or 9810.00.00. "

I was told by my moving company that as a returning / new resident we fall under Tariff 9807 (Settlers effect ) is an exemption for used mattresses that form part of a settler's effects (personal possessions) & no fumigation or certification is required.

Can anyone please share your experiences if you had trouble bringing mattresses from US?

Ush1b, I sent you a message if you need more details on moving details from CA to Toronto.
