Hi,
I just recently found out that I need to get my passport canceled, when I had a friend drop off my Student visa application at the Brampton office and they asked him for my passport (he told me they didn't specifically ask for a canceled passport just my Indian passport).
According to my certificate of Canadian citizenship (this is the wallet card right?) it says I obtained Canadian citizenship in 2004.
so according to the cgi site do I have to pay 240 dollars since I haven't canceled my Indian passport and it has been over 3 years? This doesn't really seem fair as I wasn't really told we had to cancel the passport.
Also how long does it take to get my passport stamped with the cancellation stamp? And how long does it take to get the surrender certificate?
Can I have a friend drop off my Indian passport to get it stamped at the Toronto consulate office?
When my passport gets stamped can I just bring my passport to get the visa or do I need to surrender certificate as well?
Also has anyone applied for the Indian student visa? Just wanted to know how long it took.
I know these are a lot of questions but I am really worried because my school starts on September 13 (Manipal med school) and I really need to get the Indian student visa.
Thanks for all the help
Quick answer - No, you don't have to pay $240.
There's couple of threads with tons of discussion on this topic. Search and you'll find all sorts of info, debate, confusion at the consulate, timing cutoff for the hefty/nasty fee, etc, etc.

thx,
Do you know if they cancel the Indian passport on the day you go to the indian consulate? (if no how long does it take and how long does it take to get the surrender certificate?) And if yes do I need both my surrender certificate plus my Indian passport to apply for Indian student visa or can I just have my Indian canceled passport? This would mean I can apply for the surrender certificate have my passport canceled the same day and apply for the indian student visa while I wait for my surrender certificate.
I tried calling the cgi office in toronto but I always get an automated message.
I also emailed them last week and still haven't gotten a response.
I have also read a few threads on this forum but havent gotten answer to my questions.
Thankyou
Sorry. Don't know the timeline. CGI has an exceptional ability to ignore emails and phones.
Because VFS is involved in all these processes, timeline may not be a day...might be much more.

Hi, you have to go to CGI and get your passport cancelled. Regarding cancellation fee, it will vary from case to case so they will tell you how much it will cost you when you go there. "Normally", they return the cancelled passport same day and surrender certificate arrives a few days later by post.
By the way, why don't you apply for OCI? It is much more convenient as you can live, work & study for as long as you want and it provides hassle free travel to India.
