- I want to move to a place where weather is good for most of the year (8months+). Not too hot or too cold .. where I can leave the windows of my home open. I guess California is a good place .. any others? Note: I am looking for a place with a sizable Indian community i.e. Indian restaurants, Indian movie halls, Temples etc.

If only 8+ months of good weather then NJ is the best bet considering tri-state area where there are lot of opportunities. Temples, sizable Indian community( Restaurants, Movies)
CA gets very warm in Summer not in NJ.

- Schooling for children in Canada is free. What happens if I move to the states ... is schooling free?

Public Schools are free all over US

- Cost of living I know depends on the region, and I guess California is very expensive. How much should one earn in california say to have a similar lifestyle to $100K/annum in GTA?

100K is more than enough in NJ area

- Labour in Canada is very expensive which means you have to spend lots of time doing things yourself e.g. painting homes, maintaining lawns, shovelling snow and other work around the house. Is it the same for USA?

Same here

- Canada is relatively crime free, does USA compare?

Some pockets is very high in crime rate ( avoid Jersey city, Newark area if you are planning to NJ)

It needs proper planning - which is not difficult at all. It does not need a "lot of luck" and is pretty straight-forward. Saying this from my own first hand experience.

Hi cdn_dude,

I am a new member although I have been reading this web site for couple of years. I would like to ask you something. From your posts, I assume that you were in Canada and then you moved to US after getting a job. I would like to move to US too. My field is accounting. I have M.com from India and studying for Canadian CMA. I would like to know if I do US CPA, is it possible for me get a job in the US. Do you know how do US employers recruit from Canada. Do they recruit Accounting people from Canada? Do you know any specific web sites where US employers post advertisements for Canadian accounting people? Which profession is more in demand in US?

Thanks
Munark

Accounting is not medicine, there is no shortage of accountants/accounting students in the US.

Unless you have impressive work experience then don't bother.

It is not related to shortage of doctors/engineers/accountants. I know that the accountants get TN to work in the US. The CPA will certainly help, but is not a absolute requirement to get a TN. You should start looking on job sites such as Dice and LinkedIn.

Oh, Ok Thanks for the reply. I am not planning to move immediatly. I hope to start searching 2-3 years down the road.

If there is no shortage of accounting people in the US, why is it that they have shown in the TN catagory?

I think TN is for fields where there is shortage of local talents. right?

-- TN has nothing to do with the shortage of local talent.
